Arvil Bren's Journal

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:11 pm

Quick question:

Anyone familiar with Arvil Bren's Journal, written by Tim Cummings?:

http://timsup2nothing.blogspot.com/

I really enjoyed reading it back when it was active. There was a new post at least 3 times a week, he was dedicated to consistently providing new content.

Then it just stopped. There was no explanation or anything, which was very unlike him. And the story definitely didn't end.

Hopefully, it wasn't anything serious. Perhaps he just lost interest and never came back to state that.

Anyone else familiar with the blog have any thoughts?

No I have not read this but I suppose I might have to.

Oh, and I don't think these threads are allowed here in this section but I may be wrong.

Yeah, it is very good.

If that is the case, then sorry! I've not posted much, so I wasn't sure, it seemed the obvious choice to me. If it is in the wrong spot, I'll try to continue the conversation in its rightful place, which I suppose is the General TES discussion.

It's about a fanfiction, so I'd say it's in the right place. I remember the journal back when it first started, the author had a blog up as well if I remember correctly. Not seen or heard anything from or about him since '06 though. Only suggestion I can make is see if any of his usernames from back then are still active. The only one I remember him using at another site was "Passer", though that's not what he used here...

Shame - it was a good journal, but real life has a habit of taking away our time, despite our best intentions.

I used to be in love with that fan-fic. I would read it all the time, but then He took time off (he announced he was going to), but I never got back into it. Then just like you I rediscovered it and was curious to see if he continued it, moved over to oblivion, or if it just ended, but I could ever find out. Sad really.

I Love it! How ironic though. How real life detaches you from imagination and vice versa... lol

I just figured that I'd pop in to say that I've been rereading Arvil while pasting the entries into a document file, and it's still one of my all-time favorite fanfics. The way that the author fleshes out the Vvardenfell cultures and its various political factions is nothing short of amazing. One of my favorite passages is the entry in which he compares a Bretton view of magic to a Dunmer view. None of that is in a lore article, a book, or dialogue; it's all just from the mind of a player as he thought about the different in-game personas and their possible backgrounds. Amazing!

I think that somebody really ought to write a final entry for the journal, some sort of addendum by an Imperial scribe in the 4th Era. The article could tell of how these journals, reputedly by the Nerevarine himself, were recovered from Morrowind after the Landfall. Unfortunately, some of the text appears to have been lost in the disaster. The article could then comment that, while it would be nice to have the remainder of the account, history does record that the great Archmage of Vvardenfell went on to battle and defeat Dagoth Ur. Rumors also persist of his possible connection to the Bloodmoon crisis on Solstheim and the later disappearance of both Almalexia and Sotha Sil. After these events, the Nerevarine mysteriously disappeared himself, leaving the care of the Mages' Guild in the hands of Edwinna, who would preside over the battle against Dagon.

I was a regular reader of Arvil's journal. When Tim left off, Arvil was about to go for the Telvanni Hortator position, and Tim's comments indicated he was having trouble figuring out how to write it. He didn't want to follow the actual Morrowind storyline for that, because it's so dull; every councillor agrees if his disposition is high enough, except for the one you have to kill. Apparently he couldn't come up with a suitable storyline, and eventually gave up.
