from what i gather on VS multiplayer if you win you and your team continue on if you lose you and your team are held there and repeat the mission until you win or quit.

this is what i've gathered maybe not all 100% correct.

It's very team oriented. You and your team will have missions to carry out, and the opposing team either needs to stop you from getting the objectives or completing their objectives first.

You also have freeplay mode where if you win or lose you go to a different game on a different map.

In Freeplay mode you can play through random missions and the narrative only explains what you are doing and what your squad feels about it. Of course this cutscene will last for around 20 seconds so you can skip it and set up your class. You'll then proceed to a different mission and the process repeats.

The game isn't narrative heavy. You'll receive audio recordings of the squad commanders of each side explaining their story. These of course are unlocked in the game and are optional to listen to. Then there's environmental narrative that tells a story if you pay enough attention.
