Berserker issue (Bloodmoon)

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:04 pm

None of the Berserkers in my game want to equip any armor. Unmodded they usually wear one or two pieces of Bear armor (medium) on them.

One of these mods causes the problem. I think it might be one of the mods that affect all NPC's, like the faces or clothing mods. I am still looking around for possible patches.

Elfheight is a little mod of my own design that makes High Elves a bit shorter.

I tried to fix it with the editor by replacing the Beserkers' class (Acrobat) major skill Unarmored with Medium armor. I thought that perhaps the Unarmored skill prevented them from equipping any armor, so I created a mod that changed this and put it upfront in the load order. It made no difference however, so that approach at leastdidn't fix it.

Are they not even wearing boots and helmets sometimes? Because they never wear clothing or armor besides boots and helms, and even they are random depending on which variation of Berserker spawned.

Better Bodies gets rid of the underwear that the vanilla NPCs wear, but doesn't effect their boots and helmets.

They will have the armor in their inventory, but they just won't equip it. I made sure by killing them so I could see their inventory.

If they do not have certain statistics set for the armour, then they will not wear it (or, in other words, if they do not have a high enough skill in the armour type with which you are trying to equip them, then they will not actually equip the armour). Berserkers have a 100 rating for light armour, so they should equip that type easily. However, they have very low Medium and Heavy armour levels (so to have them equip said armour, one must change those stats to a higher number). While they do equip the medium over the heavy, they might not necessarily actually put the armour on (even if it is in their inventory). Every time I have run across a Berserker, they are usually completely starkers (despite their inventory) until I am at a higher character level. Most of the berserkers should be displaying their armour. However, there are two (a male and a female berserker) that have the ID "BM_berserker_f1_lvl5" and "BM_berserker_m1_lvl5" . These will not equip the bear armour (so perhaps you might just be encountering them at this point in your adventuring, as the others are higher in level and might be placed in leveled lists to appear once the character has also attained a higher level).

That was very interesting, thanks. I did see the ID's in the editor, but I just figued they didn't have the armors in the inventory. Kind of weird that the developers even bothered with a skill requisite for wearing them, while you can simply use levelled items instead. Makes me wonder if at some point the developers had plans to let NPC's pick up items in the world, like they kinda do in Oblivion.

After you kill them, activate the console and click on them. This will show you their ID. If they are the "lvl5" iterations of the Berserkers, then at least you would know it is not mod related. If they have the any of the other IDs, though, then it might very well be a conflicting mod and would need to be explored further to get you back in the game :) .

Thanks, your post proved a quick way for me to test it. They are indeed level 5. I also tested it at high level, all berserkers equip their armor at player level 60.

How do I use the editor to change the lvl5 berserker to equip their armor anyway? I had a brief look at it earlier, but I didn't see too many settings. It is a little weird, no other npc enemy in Morrowind really behaves this way. Nothing is stopping a level 1 player to equip a full set of Daedric either.

Set their unarmored skill low and the various light, medium and heavy armor skills high.

The game makes checks so that NPCs will use the best armor they have: so, for example, if the NPC has decent unarmored skill but low heavy armor skill, and a piece of heavy armor with a mediocre protection value... it may be perfectly possible that the NPC will be better protected without wearing that piece of armor.
So the game will do the best thing for the NPC and NOT equip the armor piece.

This usually happens because of the NPC's class: some classes are better skilled in Unarmored than in the various other armor skills.

I'm not so sure about that. I tried removing Unarmored from their class (Acrobat) with a mod (put it up front on the load order too), but that didn't change anything. It is possible though that it still had enough stat increases in Unarmored to negate it not being a major/minor skill..

BUT.. anyway, I need to access BM_berserker_m1_lvl5 and BM_berserker_f1_lvl5 somehow. Still haven't found it in the editor.

Removing it from their class won't do anything. Their skills are set individually under the NPC. Find the berserkers and open their individual skills. I'd recommend not decreasing their unarmored (otherwise it makes them easier to kill) but rather just increase their other armor skills, which should result in extra armor being better than no armor, so they should equip it.

Yup, I took a quick glance at those NPCs in the CS...
They have medium armor lower than unarmored, so that seems to be the problem. And Mytch is right, altering the class won't change this, because these NPCs are not set to auto-calculate stats.

Simply raising their medium armor skill should do the trick (since they wear nothing else than boots and helmet, lowering unarmored would indeed make them weaker).
