What exactly happened to China? : Fallout Series Discussion

I am new to Fallout franchise with Fallout 3, I find the world and story very intriguing. I am trying to learn every bits and pieces I can from Wiki. Anyways all I hear is about how China nuked US. But I want to know, what exactly happened to China? Also, it is assumed that China nuked US....do you think China nuked or someone else? What happened to the rest of the world?

Well, based on the evidence I'd imagine China got hit back even harder.

Generally speaking the simple fact that DC isn't a crater shows that we did pretty well defensively, wiped out all the opposition before they could fire more than one volley, or perhaps both.

However, China did have people on the ground in the US, though they seem to have been infiltrators disguised as factory workers and such rather than an actual invading military.

The way it seems is that there was enough left of the US military to form TWO seperate factions. The Brotherhood Of Steel, and The Enclave. Some information on the computer terminals in the Pentagon (in Fallout 3) sort of points out that the beginnings of the BoS were military renegades that had some kind of conflict with the scientists they were working with, though the actual details of what those scientists were doing is sketchy. Both the BoS and Enclave being so powerful and numerous that neither can exactly laugh the other off, despite The Enclave having better technology.

Operation Anchorage might very well answer some of the questions we're discussing.

The whole world got nuked and/or radiated and/or hit by other weapons or mass destruction. All countries that possessed nukes nuked each other (and others) to cinders. It's not known who launched the first nuke, but it's quite certain that China is in a state similar to the US.

Fallout intro:

Been a while since I played Fallout 2, however if we take that literally, which continent(s) fell into the ocean?

It wasn't North America. Of course maybe this does sort of answer the question of "what happened to South America".

Maybe we'll see some kind of sick irony where one of the US's major defenses was a device that relocated a lot of the nukes heading for it into South America, sinking it. Of course I'd doubt this because the geological results would probably have taken North America with it.

Australia being a prime cantidate for sinkage, but then again maybe we're looking at the answer to a couple of other threads about Europe and Asia.
