MWSE corruption?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 12:10 pm

I get an error when I try to start a New Game or load certain saved games:

"Expression Error Unable to find referenced object "cer_diseased" in script YAC_OC_TargetCheck."

The error seems to happen in a script in Ownership Indicator.esp.
The error goes away if I disable TLM - NPC Light Sources.esp (part of The Lighting Mod Modular)

Any idea what's going on?
AFAIK there is nothing called "cer_diseased" in my game. I think it's actually a truncated part of the string "cliff racer_diseased.esp".
Somehow the Ownership Indicator script is getting a bad object from MWSE?

Is there a reason mlox always warns you about using MWSE? Is it buggy or something?

It's almost impossible to know since you didn't post your LO, but you can try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3874 to find out which mod is causing that error.

If you prefer you can always uncheck TLM - NPC Light Sources.esp with a clean save and put it back to see if that's causing it.

So I tried different combinations of mods and the problem seemed to "move" around.
At one point the problem went away only if I turned off a (fully updated) Mashed Lists.esp.

I opened and saved Ownership Indicator.esp using a hex editor so that it had a later file date. In Wrye Mash it became the LAST mod loaded, even after Mashed Lists.esp. This finally fixed my problem and allowed me to have my 213 other mods loaded without getting the error on a New Game.

Very strange problem, never seen anything like it.

FYI here is my mod order with the problem fixed.

If I permit mlox to swap Mashed Lists.esp and Ownership Indicator.esp, so that Mashed Lists is last, then the nonsense "cer_diseased" error reappears.

I wonder what this plugin does.

_018_ MPP 1.6.5 Dirty Beta Patch.esp

If you only has this esp activated, because the esm has GMST's with it which is harmless and I can't understand the reason why.

_011_ Morrowind Patch v1.6.5-BETA.esm

I also suggest that put GDR_MasterFile.esm last of the esm because it's advised that you have GDR_MasterFile.esm loaded last if you have any *dwemer* mod installed. The Tamriel Rebuilt has some dwemer ruins included in that mod.

Just a FYI, I am 99% sure cer_diseased is not referenced in that script, so it is possibly another mod causing the issue (Maybe not). Also if MWSE gives my script a bad reference, it will probably just crash the game rather than have the error you mention (which happens in the initialization of the scripts)

Thanks, I'll try putting that in mlox_user.txt

I got that plugin from http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html, here is part of the readme:
Spoiler

This is the 1.6.5 beta version of the Morrowind Patch Project. It remains in "beta" status due to the mysterious and untimely disappearance of Quarn, the man responsible for maintaining it. It has been out for so long, however, that both of the problems it presents have been identified and dealt with.

The way I have dealt with these problems is by creating a plugin with "dirty" references, meaning that they are identical to the game's original settings, and thus override the problematic changes made by the Morrowind Patch Project. This plugin is titled "MPP 1.6.5 Dirty Beta Patch.esp", and is located in the "data files" folder along with the MPP master file.

For the curious, the two problems fixed by the "dirty" plugin are as follows:

? An attempt to fix the behavior of the "Pilgrim's Path" book resulted in CTDs when attempting to read it from your inventory. Note that this problem is not unique to the latest version of the MPP.

? Edits to the "Threads of the Webspinner" dialogue rendered it impossible to receive Mephala's Skill.

? I also went and fixed some dialogue from Bloodmoon that threw some dude out into the middle of the ocean or some s__t when you got done talking to him. Or something. I forget the details, honestly.

You're welcome and thanks to clarify that about the *dirty* patch for the real MW patch.

OK, if I turn on all my mods and have Merged Lists.esp come last (like it should), then I cannot start a new game due to the corrupt string "cer_diseased" somehow showing up in Yacoby's Ownership Indicator script.

But If I turn off "Dahrk Creatures I.esp" and then reimport merged lists, everything works.

"cer_diseased" actually appears in Dahrk Creatures I.esp.
It seems something about this mod is corrupt or something is special about it and it's confusing MWSE.

Update: I tried opening Dahrk Creatures in tesame and resaving itl the binary didn't change at all.
I see nothing odd in tesame or mwedit except this does refer to "cliff racer_diseased" in some Levelled Creatures entries.
Also, I see nothing odd in the resulting Mashed Lists.esp.

That's probably correct solution of your mod issue.

If I were you I would probably forget about the Dahrk Creatures I.esp if I could play the game without it.

I've noticed pointer errors like this with MWSE mods when loading a save and having added / removed mods mid-game. Seems to occur when a new plugin gets inserted before a MWSE plugin in the load order, or the load order of MWSE plugins is shifted because of a reduction in the number loading before an MWSE plugin.

Yacoby's Ownership Indicator seems to be the canary-in-the-coalmine when it comes to this for whatever reason (might have to do with extended MGE MWSE functions and how they're indexing memory).

The solution I've found is to maintain the placement of the MWSE plugin in the existing load order - i.e. if you remove a plugin before an MWSE plugin, you need to replace it with another plugin or move in a plugin from later in the load order; only add plugins (including new MWSE plugins) after all existing MWSE plugins; or just don't mess with the load list after starting a game. FYI: I group all my plugins in the load list by type and keep MWSE / MGE plugins together which helps simplify ordering issues.

Again, that's with loading saved games. In the case of a new game it's more likely a problem with a bad script / malformed reference / corrupted plugin causing issues. You might want to try recompiling in TESCS any scripts in 'Dahrk Creatures I.esp' and resave that plugin (maybe even to a new file name). Resave it from TESCS in any case instead of from TESAME or MWEdit (and use Wrye's GMST Vaccine when saving in TESCS if 'Dahrk Creatures I.esp' has no dependencies on the expansions to avoid introducing dirty GMSTs).
