Dallas

Hey everyone.

I'm going to Dallas in a couple of weeks, but last time I visited it didn't feel like I got a chance to see the real Texas. I'm planing on just taking a busride out to some faraway saloon or something like that. If anyone has got any advice on buscompanies, or some small village I could visit, I'd really appreciate it! Any advice on how I could get to see the the real Texas starting in Dallas!

I was under the impression that the Texan's burnt down all the small villages to make firewood for making dinner on their front lawn in a makeshift BBQ during the Superbowl. :flamethrower:

While in Dallas make sure you have a good road map or GPS system cause the highways and off ramps can be confusing, also watch out for other drivers as sometime they like to cut you off or drive like mad. I've been down there a few times before.

Meh... Better off going to Elgin and Lockhart. Also Austin is better :P.
Southside Market in Elgin for the sausage. Smitty's in Lockhart for the brisket.
Probably will end up going to Smittys for my birthday or few days later if my brother takes me.
Waco has a dr pepper museum with samples.

You're only going to find what you're looking for if you visit some of the myriad old, small towns. Take your pick.

You don't want to see real Texas, you're looking for stereotypical Texas.

This.

I think you'll be fairly surprised with what you find if this is your first time coming to Dallas, and you'll have to drive pretty far if you're looking to see any "saloons".

Here, you have different types of Texas'. You have the "white" Texas, the German Texas, and the Mexican Texas. 1 trip won't give you the experience. If you want to see stereotypical Texas, then go to llano Texas. I must warn you though, they are pretty racist and will give you funny looks if your not blond hair blue eyed. If you want to see the nothingness and just pure farmland with some saloons and BBQ, then the stretch south between San antonio and a town named McAllen will be your best bet but mind you, it will probably take around 6 hours or more depending on traffic to get from Dallas to Austin. Austin is also pretty good and you get that modern cowboy vibe. I've never been to west so I can't tell you about that. If you come to the valley (southernmost portion) for kicks, it will take around 10 or more hours by car. A bus company I see here but not sure if it's also up north is Greyhound buses. Also, carry your id if your from another country cus we have border patrol checkpoints around here and they will detain you if you seem suspicious

Bah San Antonio is too big what with the 40 + game stop s as the only videogame stores...also the pizza huts... I open up 30+ envelopes for them when they do their taxes ... Good mexican food and home to Churches chicken...

Is llano the place that smells like petroluem?
Also might be good to see if there is a bbq tour bus if you are looking to eat.

Houston, San Antonio and Austin are great city's, West Texas is really scenic to. Avoid South Houston at all costs (smelly and dangerous)
