Knock knock knock...

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:21 am

Here's a simple little idea that I think would add a little more depth and realism to certain NPC interactions...

When visiting a home with a locked door, it would be great to be able to knock (or ring a doorbell) to summon the resident. The time of day you knock on someone's door could cause different reactions. For example, if you knock at midnight they may come to the door angry, or even concerned, depending on their disposition towards you. Of course, if they were out of the house, you would get a message "Nobody is home." Then you would have the option to "Break In" or "Leave". I also think it would be funny to hear their dog start barking when you're at the door!

Edit: Also, I'd like to see hours of operation posted at all businesses.

Would certainly make it more realistic. Actually have them react to you being in thier house, instead of just carrying on whatever they were doing when a complete stranger walked into the house uninvited.

I think Fable II had a system like this, you could either knock, or kick the door down (and be fined).

Dunno how they would manage it with the loading of cells. Still, it would be interesting if your approach of the door (I'm visiting / I'm lockpicking the door to steal stuff) could be made different.

Tried to make a knock-knock joke, but I gave up after "Cliff who ?" "Cliffracer fly high in the sky.".

Well, there is going to be a bit of variety. For instance if you go barging into the house of a NPC in the middle of the night they may giver you lodging if they like you enough.

They could always just have the sign saying that no one was in, and leave up to the player to choose whether to lockpick their way in.

Or it could say "Nobody is in. Perhaps this would be a good time to 'earn' a few coins..." or some such message.

Doors are already linked to a door inside the cell, so there could be some additional scripting to tell the NPC to answer. Problem though would be they can't just open the door and look out, they have to come outside. That is assuming that going between cells is not seamless.

In fallout 3 their was a quest where you had to knock on some peoples doors to get them to unlock the conversation that occurs was like talking through a intercom

And that made me laugh :lmao:

As Stormbreaker points out in Arefu you had to knock on some peoples doors and they talked to you through their door. They could do something similar to that. I'm still curious as to how selecting your dialogue options will work since according to the Game Informer article the NPC continues to do their stuff while talking and you are free to continue walking around while talking to them.

Maybe the face of the homeowner NPC could be preloaded with the exterior cell... and when you knocked they simply open a view-port and you only saw their face. You couldn't injure or pick-pocket them though, only speak to them. They could then invite you in, tell you to come back later, or even tell you off for disturbing them.

Yes, in Oblivion you could just walk into very house and go through all the rooms with the occupants just standing and staring there at you. Unless you got out of their LoS, then you could just rob them blind. :pinch:

Fable totally had this.

It totally didn't work.

None of the NPC's actually came to the door. "Ohp, someone's knocking on the door. *Continues scrubbing floor*"

That doesn't mean it wasn't a good idea... It just means they did a crappy job implementing it into Fable. Fable is kinda lame anyway.

I am playing Daggerfall lately, it has this.

When you knock a door(supposedly):
you heard a jolly voice"Welcome to my house"

Also there is something about locks not fearing me. :lmao:

Sounds like something Fable has featured for ages.

I really like this idea. As has been mentioned, something similar happens in FO3 in Arefu, where you knock on a door and are able to have a conversation with the voice of the inhabitant from the other side of the door, though you cannot see them. Seems like it would be easy enough to implement this in a fashion for TESV.

I thought about this a while ago, an then I realised:

They run on a different etiquette system to us. That's it.

I want this as well. It just makes sense... But I doubt we will see this.

If I can script this into Morrowind, then this should be a feature the devs could easily implement.
