My BSA Browser can't handle the truth

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 3:13 pm

I've recently downloaded Hedgehog12's Imperial Armour Replacer (rev8), and just like all his other replacers that work beautifully for me, I used the exact same installation recipe of -

Downloading the file, extracting the BSA and .esp, and then registering it automatically via the BSA Browser/Registrar.

For some odd reason this time, when I tried to register the BSA file through the browser this time, it comes up with the message that all morrowind bsa's are all properly registered. I initially thought that maybe this was right, but as soon as I entered my game, I started seeing those classic screen warnings of missing .nif files and marker replacements being executed. I don't know how to get around it, and I never found an article that taught me how to manually register my BSA files into the morrowind.ini

I can tell you guys that recently, I did use the TESTool to merge some .esp's because the initial warnings when I started the game got on my nerves.

Bottom line is, any help or pointing in the right direction is much appreciated and I thank anyone who contributes any input in advance.

you might have more "Archive" entrys just add another if needed

Thank you. I registered it manually, and the warning stopped coming up. Now there is a different discrepancy; the revamped models don't take effect at all. All the guards are in their original armor meshes and textures and some with the medium/chain armor are missing parts of their arms/shoulders when walking about.

that's the issue with BSA's that the loose images will be used over the BSA i'm not sure how to work around that.

Do you have the Steam version of Morrowind? The problem might be the timestamps for the .bsa's; newer stuff takes precedence over older stuff. I think (from what I recall) the Steam timestamps for the Morrowind.bsa is more recent than the mod you are trying to use, and therefore will take precedence over the mod's .bsa.

Definitely not. I got the CD as a gift from a friend about 7 years back. What boggles me in particular is why this replacer in particular is causing me problems when every other armor/weapon mod from the same author that uses these BSA's works perfectly fine. It was a very smooth and simple procedure to install these up until now. Is it possible that TEStool had anything to do with it? Maybe when it merged esp's or anything of that particular sort? I'm a user of the 'just fix it' button with that mod. Perhaps it jumbled up something in the .ini file or the esp load order etc etc etc...

I don't know the details, but everything I've read about the "just fix it" button says using it is a bad idea that can cause strange errors.

Is there much of anything I can do at this point to reverse that?

TESTool shouldn't have been the cause of this problem. I can't think of any way it would effect BSAs.

To reverse the effects of "Just Fix It!!" be sure to not use the Merged Dialog or Merged Levels it created. (Merged Objects is ok)
Then create and activate a Mashed Lists in Wrye Mash. Then Update your Save in Wrye to match your Load list. Then Repair your Save in Wrye.

Although all that is highly recommended, it still won't fix your current problem.

Please post the Archive section of your ini here. Maybe one of us will see a problem you're missing.

I think latendresse76, may be on it. If you have any files in the Meshes\ folder they will be retrieved before they are extracted from BSAs. Pluginless mesh/texture replacers will often just drop the new files into the folders where Morrowind looks for them. The game checks the actual file path for the file, then it checks the BSA if the physical file path isn't there. I'd do a search for one of the problem .nifs and see if there is already a file of the same name.

the other poss ability to correct the issue would be to extract the bsa to loose files and then install the loose files and not use the bsa though it wouldn't make much of a difference if the bsa was called since the loose files would be used instead.

Yep, the files are already unpacked anyway and in their respective locations, I just double checked. Sorry guys.

If the files are unpacked and named properly, there are only two possible reasons the new meshes are not being used:

1. The new mod is not calling them.
2. Another mod is taking precedence for those particular nifs.

The only way I can think of to fix this issue would be to ditch the merged mod(s), use the original .esp files and make certain the mods with the models you want to use are loading last in the load order so they can't be overwritten.

I started a new game to check it out and loaded my savegames as well. Nothing. What I found interesting though was that I tried elaura's most recent advice and I changed the archive order in the ini where the imperial armor takes precedence over the rest of the replacers, and now I actually get missing texture file (.dds) warning screens every time I enter the game.

First, have you actually let the game load completely and saved in a new slot? If not give that a shot. If the errors persist, that would indicate either the texture files aren't there or the path is wrong in the .nif file(s). If you're certain you unpacked the bsa completely and correctly, the next thing I'd do is open one of the .nif files in a program like nifskope. If it shows up with a texture, I'm completely stumped. If it shows up as an all white model, then the texture file is either missing, or not where the .nif thinks it should be.

If missing textures haven't been reported before, then it is likely all of the files from the BSA are still not quite where they're supposed to be. Do you mind posting your warning.txt file? You can use the <> tag to enclose it in a code box to save space.

that seems to be and error on the creators part. i have the Better armor (rev8_Imperial(st+ad).bsa extracted and there isn't any @_armTempBO2_dt.dds in the textures folder but it is called in the NIF so i don't know what to say

Perhaps it's the download source? I got mine from PES. Is there another version of it in TESnexus or anywhere that you got it from, maybe?
