Can I install non-English mods?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 10:12 am

I am browsing some Chinese & Japanese Oblivion mod forums and am seeing some really interesting mods that I don't think I've seen on TESNexus.

for example:

- http://s499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/HISSSSA/HS-Armor001.jpg
- http://img1.chnren.com/2010/03/28/197/141028737555711.jpg
- http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/attachment.aspx?attachmentid=574510
- http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/attachment.aspx?attachmentid=582270
- http://img2.pict.com/1b/9e/1f/2872849/0/800/sample.jpg

so I'm wondering if I can install non-English Oblivion mods without having problems?

Theoreticly it should be possible. You must only check whther the names of the folders are in normal font (i.e. not in chinese or whatever laguage that is) and then check the .esp to see if the names of items are in normal font too. (I do not know if there is a localised version of CS for China). Other than that, it should be no problem.

If the mod needs OBSE and uses commands to find "non English words" in your English menus or pathways or sound effects or other object "names" you will have issues.

I really do not think a "dress up" type mod would need to use such commands.
But be smart and back up your files first!

If new wearables are placed in containers there's a possibility that the container and/or the cell it's in will show its name in the language used by the modder's CS. (If you have the character set available - otherwise you may get total garbage)

got it. I suppose I just have to go into CS first and rename whatever language it is originally into English =3

probably won't be able to get any quest mods since the dialogues will be all non-English.

you can always copy the dialogue and paste it into an online translator, then clean it up.

here's the Chinese forum I'm looking at for anyone who might be interested.
you can use Google toolbar to translate the site into English.

http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/tes/ (main forum page)
http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/showforum.aspx?forumid=197&typeid=59 (mods page)

most of the mods there are already on TESNexus and many are translated into Chinese.
but you will also find some unique mods (that I haven't seen on TESNexus) such as these:

http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/showtopic-1144338.html (huge quest mod in a Chinese setting with unique monsters + armors)
http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/showtopic-1193714.html (very cute female adoring fan with really cool armors)

note: you have to sign up and login to be able to view the pictures and download the files (I think).

Take a look at the http://www.egg-of-time.us/portal/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1825 application. I've not used it myself as of yet, but it looks really promising. It will translate your mod from a foreign language to a target language like English. :goodjob:

I am tempted to download some of these mods (along with egg translator) because, these chinese know how to make a character to advertise! ha ha ha

but seriously, I do want to see what they might be like, but I have a feeling it will be a large headache for me to wade through the foreign language-ness
I know un poco espanol...nada chinese. I'd imagine just getting the mod itself would be difficult, extracting and so forth (even with a translator) would give me more of a headache.

Texture replacers are generally not too bad, as long as a) they don't have an esp; and B) you know where they're supposed to go. I'd love to get my hands on that zombie texture replacer... where can I find it?

here's the link to the zombie replacer: http://3dmgame.chnren.com/bbs/showtopic-1122484.html

but I have to warn you, not only you need to register, they host the files on a place where you need to ALSO register THAT and download a FlashGet type of program to download. so it is some hassle =\
