The Elder Scrolls - Atmosphere Discussion.

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:26 am

One of the reasons I like Morrowind over Oblivion (please, do not make this an Elder Scrolls war) was the atmosphere. When I play a new rpg, I don't care if the graphics, story, animation or anything is good, if the atmosphere is lacking, then I might just forget about playing the game. I think that the reason Oblivion wasn't that good to me was that it wasn't as atmospheric as Morrowind.

If TES:V is to be better than the past Elder Scrolls games, then please, and I mean PLEASE make the atmosphere as one of the top goals of developing this game.

To Increase the atmosphere of the game, TES:V would need:

1 - Not to "epic" music, but rather slow, and calm mysterioise tracks.
2 - Let us see, touch and feel the lore In TES:V
3 - Do use the same voice actor more than 1 time pr. race and gender.
4 - No enemy/item scaling to your level, the feeling of weakness and danger enhances the atmosphere alot!
5 - Don't make the landscape and weather too colerfull, but a little "heavy" as Morrowind.

What is youre thoughts of the atmosphere, and how can we enhance it?

I'll say the same thing here as I did in the other atmosphere thread. I don't want ES V to try to emulate Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, or Oblivion. I want it to be its own game and stand on its own legs. But to address your points:

1) I'm not convinced that you actually played Oblivion past the opening cutscene if you think the music is all epic and dramatic. Most of it is quite calm and peaceful, with the exception of the battle music.

2) Not entirely sure what you mean here. I agree, the lore should be unique and rich.

3) I'm assuming you meant "do NOT use..." The "one voice per race" thing never really bothered me in either Morrowind or Oblivion, though I will say I hope that each race gets a unique voice again.

4) I don't think the game would really work without some form of scaling as it would become a pushover in the later levels, but again, I agree that there should be some feeling of weakness in the beginning.

5) Again, I really don't think "like Morrowind" or "like Oblivion" has any place in these discussions. Depending on the setting and atmosphere, it could either be colorful or somber. If it's in Skyrim as evidence would seem to suggest, then I'll guess that it will be brighter and more colorful at lower elevations (more lush foliage, etc.) and in the south, and more somber in the mountains and snow.

Yes, please make the lore influence the game more! And don't take out any more books like in Oblivion. Just because your target audience doesn't like reading doesn't mean you should take important backstory out!

And a lack of scaling is important to feel more immersed in the world. In the real world rats don't just become mountain lions because you grew up. :P

This is just another add on to the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1104003-tes-v-ideas-and-suggestions-171/ topic, so please continue the discussion there.

Really, until and if there is a TES V forum, please keep all the TES V spin off topics down.
