Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:07 pm

Hello, I was just wonder if I bought Fallout 3 from my local Game when i go to install it can I install it as a steam game like I can with New Vegas.

Also If your wondering why I just don't buy the steam verson of the game, Its because Steam is £20 for it and Game is £7.

I don't think so - the retail version of Fallout 3 uses Games for Windows Live for DRM and achievements.

No you can't. Only retail games that utilize Steamworks can be downloaded.

I have done it with some games. But I bought Fallout 3 through Steam so I did not have to try it. Some games you can and it is pretty easy to do so I say give it a try if you want, nothing bad can come of it.

It's true that you can launch non-steam games through Steam if you want (to take advantage of the chat feature and the ingame browser) but there's no way to really register your physical Fallout 3 copy to your Steam account.

Some games can be moved over to Steam. I did this with UT3 when the Black Edition was released.

With some games you can enter the cd-key via 'games/activate a product on Steam'. This adds the game to your Steam account and allows you to download it through Steam.

Fallout 3 however, didn't come with a cd-key, only a LIVE_key. So the best you can do is fo to 'Games/add a non steam game to my library'. This will allow you to launch the game through Steam, but you won't get any other Steam effects from it.

Actually it uses Securom. Surprise, surprise. Though only a disk check version of it.

I don't think you can actually call GFWL a DRM either since it did nothing to protect tie DLC files which allowed for the "offline mode" usage once you bought them. Albeit the DLCs were downloaded to some secluded folder in the bowels of your computer, though thats hardly anything to mention.
