Hate it when I step right into some hidden mine field and 'splode, or fall down from some cliff, or get ambushed by some too strong critter or bandit. x)
You should be able to save, like in Tactics' Tough Guy mode, at your HQ. That could be your owned house.

Then perhaps that could be an option as well.
You could either have a "save-at-home" fallback save just in case something like that happened, or you could have a "that is a shame, start over!" kind of option. Having lots of choices is never a bad thing, as it leaves it in the hands of the player.
