Several things

Its been years since I've been on here but I'm already hyped for Skyrim. I though Oblivion was a damn good RPG and this might be out of place but I am hoping they bring back the gritty and darker atmosphere of Morrowind. It had a warmer and almost 'homey' feel to it as well. I still consider to be the best RPG and maybe even best game I've ever played. I can always go back to it without feeling it feeling repetitive.

One of the things I noticed after playing Oblivion was the change in the sound of the Dunmer voices. In Morrowind they had a slightly raspier and older sound to them. One of my favorite lines was "Please, join me." I feel that Bethesda took all of the flavor out or Dark Elves by making them sound nearly identical to humans.

The Shivering Isles came closer to the atmosphere of Morrowind partly due to just the artwork. I'm not sure where I'm going with any this. Nostalgia and Hope?

Based on what we know about Skyrim, I'd be surprized if it's atmosphere wasn't darker than that of Oblivion... of course, I'm surprized at how light Oblivion's base atmosphere is in hindsight...

I'm with you on this one, OP. We can be fairly sure the overall feel will be grittier and closer to MW than to OB. What we can expect is some severely altered stuff compared to OB or MW. Perhaps some things will be fundamentally closer to the game mechanics we saw in FO3. I presume it isn't futile to hope that MW fans will feel at home in SK.

Let's hope it'll be MW-like!

I agree with the OP: Morrowind is the greatest RPG ever made (according to my tastes)! I remember buying it 8 years ago, playing it for the first time and many other moments I played it. I do remember buying Oblivion, I was so excited about it, but playing it wasn't that amazing to me. It was OK, I would give it a 7.5, but not a 9 or a 10. Let's hope Skyrim will use the foundations of Morrowind, the aspects that made the game so great: dark atmosphere, much lore, good quests, great story, truly unique alien-looking hand-crafted world, etc

I think the world of Skyrim is very fitting for that! When I think of the world of the Vikings I don't think of a semi-Disney-like world, but instead of quite a dark world.

That Morrowind Dunmer voice, unwelcoming as it is, kinda makes me feel at home. You could almost taste the ash in the air.

why dont you just play Morrowind instead of imposing the ideas on Skryim
I want Skyrim to be its own game and it probably will because ES games are drastically different

I agree too that Skyrim should be unique, thus very different from other TES games. But, on the other hand, the foundations of TES 3 I would like to see also in Skyrim (like those I mentioned in my previous post). Not done in the same way, I don't mind changes, even big ones. Change can be good, it's even necessary.

Maybe that's what made Morrowind so great, it was a truly unique game! Reproducing that will not have the same effect.

I really dont see why people loved the dunmer voice so much, I mean it was awesome, but it was used in about 10 lines

Well obviously I want a unique ES game but I guess I hope they're able to capture that world like Morrowind that left you with this emotional attachment to it.

The main thing that I want from Morrowind is the quirkiness.

Yes, if they return to those feature that made Morrowind such a unique game that left its deep mark on your mind for such a long time, it would be great.

Oblivion was shallow in comparison, and I would return to Morrowind any time, just to take in it's atmosphere a little bit.

I actually thought the Dunmer voices were very distinctive in Oblivion, but I played Oblivion first.

I saw someone try to explain it such that the Dunmer outside of Morrowind don't need to constantly breath the ash filled air. Obviously the main reason was different voice actors though.
