Just bought FO3:GOTY today, installed with minor lag on disc 2, and have not been able to get past the point where I select 'male' for my character. I've tried downloading some .dll file like some youtube video suggested, and removed the intro video from Data and fallout_default, which did not work. I've tried patching to 1.7 but it gets to 100%, launches the game, the updater stops responding and closes when I close the game, but the game version is still showing as 1.0 in the uninstall menu of Windows. I hear the game has Win7 issues but to the point that you can't actually play it? Period? There has to be something I can do ;-;

Oh my God, numbers! They haunt me so!

So much wrong with this.
1) You have a fairly powerful video card, so you dont need the modified .dll.
2) You have GOTY edition so there is no need to patch the game.
3) You should never modify the Fallout_Default.ini, the one that you want to change is in My Documents>My Games>Fallout 3.

You mention you cant get past the part where you choose Male? What happens? Does it just freeze? If it does just freeze try the quad core fix.
Open up the .ini file located in My Documents>My Games>Fallout 3. *Do not alter the one in the actual game directory labeled Fallout_Default_ini*
In the FALLOUT.ini find the line

bUseThreadedAI=0
change the 0 to a 1

then below it add the line

iNumHWThreads=2

It most COMMONLY freezes right after choosing male, but will generally free at the VERY beginning (before the screen flashes white as you're born), and sometimes I'll make it a few bits passed choosing my six, but I have yet to make it to the play-pin area. I didn't figure I was gonna have to do any of that extra stuff(ini,dll,patch), but the problem has been since installation. So if the default installation doesn't work, I can only assume the answer isn't on my game DVD. I tried messing around with my video settings mostly, hoping somehow I was just crashing the system on "Ultra High", but no. That's when I tried the .dll and all that.
I'll go ahead and reload the default .ini, replace the intro video, and alter the two lines you suggested there and see how it goes. Ty.
Oh, and if I don't need to patch, why does the game show as v1.0 in the uninstall menu instead of 1.7?

I reverted back to my original fallout_default, then went to the fallout.ini and changed the 1 line and added the next. Choosing my character stats atm, which is by a looooooong shot the farthest the game has loaded for me, so everything is looking good atm. Tyvm, I'll post again if this celebration turns out to be premature.
