Speculation about gameplay

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:38 pm

First let me say Hello all you shiny people, long time reader first time poster.

I have a question about the future of the multiplayer of Brink, and I know it will be mostly speculative at this juncture but I feel compelled to ask.
Being a teamwork focused gamer, I have migrated from MMO's to FPS's and being from a gaming background that is highly dependent upon teamwork it was a shock to say the least when playing in the FPS genre. Great fun mind you but very difficult to get used to the fact that almost no one had your back so to speak. I have adapted as best I can and am completely enthralled with FPS play now, however I am always on the look out for the game that will bring me back the experience of team work I left from my MMO days.

The closest I have come to that was BFBC 2 I loved running as a medic with my squad and dominating the battlefield with my ability to support my team and not rely on my less than average slaying skills. Unfortunately BFBC 2 started devolving into a circle strafing fest with the air support and what folks I did play with lost interest and left the game. I have been able to jump on there solo and find a decent team mate or 2 but never a full squad let alone a full team that worked together.

Enter Brink and its promise of team based objective only gaming and I am in gaming heaven!! My wonder at this point, will this game turn out much the way BFBC 2 did and have a good team oriented start but devolve into "power" classes that jsut have folks running willy nilly and leave us teamwork/objective focused folks in the dust so to speak? I have read a lot about SD since I started following Brink anad they seem to have some success at building objective based games. But I have no experience playing those games and am here asking anyone that does if they feel this game will deliver that teamwork experience I am talking about for longer than a few months?

I apologize if this was asked and answered in any other thread, I have searched but have yet to find an answer to my question, hence the first time post. I thank you for your time.

Welcome here is the http://www.fragworld.org/frag/brink/the-fragworld-brink-compendium.html and of course a :turtle:

I really think it will having staying power. After all W:ET has over half a billion games played. Also you will find plenty of people here to play Brink with.

Also I feel you about BFBC2. I stopped playing for awhile and all my data got erased and when everyone is using the new and better guns its a lot less fun.

Well all classes are balanced so there probably won't be a power class.

Also, welcome to the forum, here's a :turtle:

If you have a PC, you can download and play Enemy Territory for free if you want to experience a SD game. (It still has an active online community, I have heard)

So far, it seems that completing objectives is focused on a lot in Brink (since you get more XP for doing objectives than killing people for the most part), and completing objectives help the team, sooooo.......We'll see, I guess? ^_^

pretty much everyone here is fanatical about the game
the only way we all leave Brink is that Brink 2 will come out
more then likely all the core fans here will become a clan lol

Amen to that OP. I'm struggling to stay dedicated to BFBC2 on Xbox but I suffer from the same problems. I either get a team that doesn't know what they're doing (like a medic team mate who doesn't revive me when I die 2 feet from him) or no team at all. And most of the time NO ONE has a mic. I always play with a mic; they came with every single 360 ever made but no one seems to have one. It's like they all accidentally sat on them. And yes, EVERYONE hates the helicopters. The equipment given to us to take them down is ridiculously underpowered mainly due to how slow it is. Also how we can clip the tails of the chopper with a RPG and not even register a hit on it. I've had a good handful of friends leave it behind.

All i can say is that there aren't any helicopters in Brink and thats hope enough for me. Also I'm sure the unlocks won't end halfway up the ranks (like at lvl 25 in BFBC2) so ppl who will eventually leave should stick around longer. There's always going to b ppl with no mics though. If you get a bit lonely just come on here and make a thread asking for willing friends on ur particular platform, so you'll always have some reliable friends to game with.

Like shadow said, there is no power class. All the classes and body types are balanced, you cant just have a full team of the same body types and the same class and win, each class is suited to do different thing. Even if there was a best combat setup, going for kills only will not get you very many points, so people will not use that.

The points are setup so that you are encouraged to help your team, like i said before, just getting kills will get you nothing in comparison to objectives. This will encourage players to work as a team and not be lone wolves. The guys who have played a hands on demo of brink say that even if your team does not have a mics, the squad commander and the callouts characters in the game make let you be co-ordinated.

This game also isn't going to be a mediocre port from the PC to the other systems. Brink has been developed equally for all three.

(In regards to the heli problem in BC2, if you're not having luck with rockets, have you tried using the M95 on them?

I don't buy into that before it runs smooth on my PC.

Crysis 2 was said to get the best quality on all systems as well - Crytek being an original PC developer, too. Turns out they were talking crap.

Thank you for the replies! I am reading over everything in the link to the Brink compendium and it sure helps in seeing an answer. I have high hopes for this game and it is apparent that everyone else does as well. I appreciate the friendliness you all have extended in answering a nooby question that probably has been answered or asked in a various amount of ways. I look forward to seeing you on the battlefield!

It's a good way to get a feel for the objective based gameplay.

BF2 had better team play than BC2 I believe for 1 main reason in BF2 VOIP worked and in BC2 it's broke. I hope Brink has a working VOIP because it is probably the most crucial element to any battle and team coop it's 'communication'. Even if the other person does't have a mic you still can tell them something which I recall helped at times to get someone that wasn't playing team based to have some sense of participation after a few choice words. Commander I thought was such a integral part that it did through the game out of balance if 1 team had a commander and the other didn't. When talking to other squad leaders it was amazing how you would develop a rapport with so many people you didn't know and that was just as fun to me as the game itself.

Maybe with only 8 people to a side it won't be as important but I still think it can't hurt to have a working VOIP.
