Skyrim Typography

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:23 pm

Just wondering if anyone would know what font Bethesda used for the title "SKYRIM" (not "The Elder Scrolls V"; I know that one).

Also, would anyone know what editing it looks like they used to get the typography to look like that? All I can think of is a Bevel with a hard shadow, plus some brush strokes to scratch it up.

Looks very close to Palatino. Yea, hard chisel bevel would get you sort of there, but most likely it was done by hand. I would do the hard chisel bevel to get started, then smooth things out, add details, and textures by hand.

EDIT: Looked at it again, the M is definitely not from Palatino, but your looking for something similar.

Thought this was gonna be about actually using the blank paper, quills, and ink wells this time around. Am disappoint.

The chiseled look I have used in GIMP with the http://fence-post.deviantart.com/art/Lord-of-the-Rings-Script-2-2-74864269. It is quite easy to change colours and shadows but I am not sure what the font is though.

Upon more research, I've found that the Hub had a much better picture of the font:

As you can see, the K and the R have a unique curve towards their intersections. The serifs are sharp and subtle...
Definitely not Times New Roman :P

Given all the new talent at Beth this one is liable to be custom.

I wouldn't bother with Times New Roman

Palatino's K, S, and R, are a lot closer to it than Times New Roman(just not the Y), especially the R which doesn't come back to touch the stem like it does in the other. I am almost positive you are looking for a variation of that, although its very possible its a custom typeface that Bethesda had specially made for them, in which case you probably wont find it.

EDIT: Yea, looked at that K and R on your image there... I don't recognize that from anything that would be commonly used. Its probably custom made, but you could still find what it was based on. Closest thing to it, and you might be able to make the changes yourself if you are planning to use it for something.

I decided to use Palatino. I'm hoping, if I have time, too actually try and recreate the font, but it's not that urgent at this point.

I tried discovering myself. Using http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ (Which is usually very reliable when it comes to finding fonts from images) using http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv175/Proditus/Skyrim.jpg yielded no results.

For the most part, it resembles many of the commonly used fonts out there, but the way the M is formed and the unique curves in the K and the R make it unlike any font I've seen before.

It's entirely possible that this is an in-house font. As for the usual "The Elder Scrolls" part of the logo, that is the signature Magic Cards font used in all of the games (http://www.coolstuffinc.com/images/Products/mtg%20art/Legends/Elder%20Spawn.jpg, as in the trading card game. See the word Elder? :P)

I'd like to find this font someday. It's really nice looking.

Quite. I might just drive down to Rockville and ask them for it. :P

EDIT: I've also decided that I think rather than a brush, the texture on the font is actually an overlay of some metal texture. I've spent hours looking for a texture like it with no luck :/
