My mod wish list and request for help...

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 11:04 pm

I thought I would write down a list of things that I would like to have in my list of mods for Fallout 3 in the hope that when I was finally done, I would have the ULTIMATE Fallout 3 experience.

I have enclosed a list of the mods that I am running and I would value some input as to how to get this running more smoothly. It generally works good but there are cases where there is just WAAY too much instability. Crashes and other weird glitches. Can I get some feedback?

First I will describe which mods I want to use.

1) Mods which allow me to customise my characters appearance. Hair, eyes, tattoos etc. nvde skins are okay as well. They add immersion. I'd like it if they didn't conflict with Project Beauty as I really like that mod.

2) Mods which use the crafting feature at the workbench. I liked the fact that I had to actually keep and scavenge various items in the Wastes to make bullets etc. What mods do I need to install to make 8mm ammunition for example? The Enclave had interesting weapons that used this but NO schematics for it!

3) Fallout Wanderers Edition. I just loved what this mod did. I disabled the Primary Needs as eating/sleeping/drinking thing was simply too annoying IMO but I liked the other things. I know I don't have the latest version so anything I need that will update or improve this mod is just great for me.

4) Mods which improve the look of clutter and other scenery in the Capital Wasteland. I previously tried using these but they slowed down my computer SO MUCH that I was forced to uninstall them. But they sure looked great! I' wondering if any new mods have been released that work a little more smoothly. I'm currently running a GTX260 with a DuoCore Processor 3.0GHz and 8 Gigs of RAM if this helps anyone.

5) Perks. I love these little things. You can see that I have included some here and I honestly enjoy them. Are there others out there I should be looking at? Remember that almost ALL my mods on this list are close to a year old now.

6) New quests. I played The Cube mod and loved it. I really did. Even though for me it crashed at the end and I couldn't go further with it. Are there mods that allow that kind of experience since I have been away from Fallout 3?

And now for the mods I DON'T WANT!

1) Nothing with nudity and/or porm. I have no interest in such as that. I'm one of those people that just cannot see a reason to have that as part of my video game experience.

2) No game breaking weapons or cheats. I like a challenge and using my wits to get through the game. I don`t need a gun that can level Megaton with one shot. Unlimited ammo machines and the like are just not something I enjoy.

3) No mods for companions. No thanks. I just like to be alone in my wasteland travels and never saw a reason to keep anyone with me.

I appreciate any help that I can get and I look forward to hearing back from people in the modding community that are a good deal more savvy about this kind of thing than I am. I previously applied the above mods myself but I am not an expert and using utilities to check for mod conflicts and generally improve my Fallout 3 experience is simply beyond me. Even with the guides there, I am just not getting it. I've even used utilities that examine the mod list for conflicts (can't remember the name of the program) and it came up clean, only to STILL have crashes and conflicts. Right now with this mod list there are hairstyles and eyes that are unavailable to me. I guess I am looking for a direction to get the help I need.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP!

I suggest not using FOOK and FWE together. They change many of the same things, and even with the compatibility patches you don't really end up with either mod's vision. You just end up with an inconsistent experience.

Further recommendations:
  • Update to the latest FWE
  • Cut down on the perks mods. FWE reworks perks, and cluttering your list up with other mods' perks undoes some of the FWE balance.
  • Project Beauty works pretty well and is now supported by FWE.
  • Browse Nexus for texture replacers. There are many good ones, choices for clutter, etc. It's your taste, so pick what you like.
  • EVE and WMK and MMM play pretty nice with FWE. Just be careful to get the correct FOIP patches and use Mez's Merged patch.
  • Many quest mods need cleaning with FO3Edit, because they can cause instability.

I would start with FWE+WMK+EVE+MMM+PB, add in your favorite texture replacers and stop there until you get a stable game experience. That's actually quite a lot of pretty fundamental changes to your game right there. Down the line you might find little extras you want to add, but don't go overboard at the outset, since that itself tends to cause instability.

Finally, it would probably help you to give up this idea of the ULTIMATE experience. There really isn't any such thing, and chasing it leads to massive modlists that cause inconsistent gameplay and instability. Plus, there are many mods which are not compatible with each other, but are each great in their own right. It's more fun to replay with different mods for a new experience each time.

posted elsewhere repeated here since it fits...

MEGATON SNIPERS Lonethar, megaton snipers...
Mans the currently inactive crows nests of Megaton and adds a few interesting touches to that town.
Altair , Detrot, Sonya, and Ripely (the snipers defending Megaton against raiders ) are friends, I cannot do without (they are NOT companions, but they are seen all over town )

Do not masterupdate the mod (if you use that feature it gets ctd's), just recheck it afterwards and it runs fine

Two things:

1. Unless I am mistaken, the newest FOOK and the newest FWE do not work with the old "FOOK+FWE" patch. You have to choose one.

2. You should try the Unofficial DLC patches directly after the DLC in the load order, unless otherwise specified.

Thank you very much for your reply. I wasn't aware that there would be conflicts with FOOK and FWE. Ill try the game again using just FWE. And I'll update to the latest version while I am at it. I just have to ask though, is the WMK mod still super over powered or has it been fixed for balance? I used it before and it was WAY too powerful.

Thank you for your reply. I definately will incorporate the unofficial DLC patches into the next mod list.

I wanted to resurrect this thread as a "Lonethar Has Another Question.."

Whats a great quest mod to try out? Anyone care to share their favorite? I loved Cube Experimental, but haven't really tried out much more than that. Puce Moose has some good ones as well apparently..? Let me know of any I should look into trying. Be aware though, that mods with quest rewards that are game breaking..(500000 caps or a nuclear gun as examples) are not for me. Thanks in advance!

And can anyone direct me to a list of all the new perks introduced in the latest version of FWE? By this I mean ALL perks that this great mod adds to the game.

I don't like this recommendation. And I say that having work as a modder in both FOOK and FWE.

What's a mod's individual vision as compared with what someone wants to see in their game?

I can't suggest tearing out any of your hand-chosen mods for reasons like this. If FOOK and FWE are making an enjoyable game environment you should endeavor to keep both instead of throwing one away like a turd.

Stability: FO3MasterUpdate and a "merged patch" helps, there are threads around about how to use those.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your input. I only really have ONE problem with my load list as it is, and have touched on it in this thread. One is stability. The other is that I can`t craft the 8mm ammo. And as for using FO/MasterUpdate and a merged patch, well I`ll look into doing that again, but it didn`t seem to stop some annoying crashes. (Maybe I`m not doing it correctly..?) I thought maybe the idea of using them both in a single game was what was causing the crashes...even with the merged patch I used. So I thought I would try to get the input from people obviously more skilled than I am in this stuff....

...and honestly thanks for the help so far guys!

And one more thing I'd like some help on. If I was to download the latest version of FWE 5.02, how would I have to change/alter my load order so that it would work. Would I have to disable FOOK2? What changes would I have to make? I had ALOT of help for this current load order with my ex-boyfriend and now find myself wondering what my next step is. Thank you for any assistance! Any maybe even throw out this question. Is the FWE 5.02 really worth it to me if I don't really use the primary needs and other 'realism' mods? I mostly just liked it for the added items etc..

I'm going to continue using the same thread instead of making innumerable new ones. That way I can get all the info in one place. No ideas out there for quest mods akin to Cube Experimental? I'm asking as that mod was seriously fun!

If you have a problem with stability you might need to apply the "Fallout 3 multicore fix" if you haven't done so already (just google it, you should find a pretty good instruction right away how to do it).

Regarding FWE, if you're main interest really is more with new items and such then maybe staying with FOOK2 would be the better option. Currently you wouldn't be able to use both together as they're incompatible, and while FWE does offer a great number of features, we do aim more for realism and challenge.

So I have made a decision to include the newest version of FOOK2 and I was wondering if I could get some help. I *DID* read the install notes and am FAIRLY certain that I know how to install it, but I was wondering if I could get some additional help with my load order and if someone could tell me which mods in my load order currently ( see the above post of my load order in this thread) that I either have to remove or delete altogether. I would prefer to be able to keep all my save games but if that is impossible, I would be willing to start again.

Anyone have an idea when it was supposed to be out of the beta and into the final released version? I ask as maybe it would be wise to wait a few weeks or so? It took me ALOT or trial and error on my part to get the above list working and I would welcome any help to get a stable load order chock full of the new FOOK goodness..!

Thank you very much in advance for any help you can give me.

And I looked for a multi-core fix for Fallout 3 and I was unable to find one. My google skills need some serious improvement perhaps. Anyone know where to get that?

You can find the multicore fix in the http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0ASdCGxH-MDdeZGRzNmtyNzdfNGhobTJ2dmZu&hl=en. There's lots of general troubleshooting advice applicable for all mods in there, alot of it is not FWE specific.

Could fixing the multi-core problem be as easy as adding 2 lines to the fallout.ini file? Seriously? Nothing else but that? I thought it would be more...involved. Thank you for the heads up!

Return to Fallout 3
