Is there an alchemy system in Daggerfall? If so, how does it work?

You can't brew the potions yourself.

You can only make them by using a potion maker's service in the Mages Guild or one of the Temples. You need to be a guild member to be able to do this.

And apart from finding a recipe or a ton of trial and error, there is no way to know what any particular mixture will produce. Better to just buy potions instead of brewing them.

Mmm... are you sure the Mages offer potion making? (I apologize if my memory is fuzzy on this since it's been about 10 years since) I coulda swore it was just Temples / DB... maybe I'm wrong though.

chaosapiant: Most temples offer the service around membership level

. Give Arkay a try if you would like potion making a level earlier and want a well rounded temple focused on healing. (Some temples do not offer potion making. Talk to people and explore the temple's services before joining. You can only join one!)

^ Haha, I feel ya on that... I wouldn't discourage against brewing if you have a hard-copy of recipes though. :)

Potion Formulae (for printing) :read: http://uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall%3a%50otions

* Recommend against reading too many things on UESP if you want the fun of finding out first-hand in-game. (best way)
Some things are just a joke though, like finding the formulae of many potions via written recipe in-game; ridiculously too rare.

You are indeed right. I just checked the Daggerfall Chronicles. There are no potion makers or potion sellers in the Mages Guild.
My bad! :P

What do the potions of purification, and restore power do? This looks interesting.

Purification removes diseases and/or poisons. Restore power replenishes your magicka.

Potions always seemed kind of meh to me. There wasn't anything that could do that couldn't be better handled by magic, except of course restore power if you're a mage. Though I do have critical weakness to paralysis, so I do carry around a potion of free action in case I run out of spell points.

Though in a way, I find it really strange that the Mage Guilds does not even have a Potion Maker.

if the mages guild had a potion maker, then there'd be little incentive to join a temple. but yeah, considering many mage guild quests involve fetching ingredients...
