Daggerfall crashing in NPC conversation

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 7:08 pm

Is this a long time bug? Every now and again, when clicking on a subject while talking to an NPC in a town, the game crashes to desktop. No error message fom DOSBox or from the front end (D.O.G.) I am using, just a clean, silent crash to desktop! It's a bit annoying as I don;t often to remember to save in towns like I do in dungeons!

I don't think I've ever had this happen. Does Daggerfall crash or DOSBox?

If it were Daggerfall, Dosbox would spit out an error message.

Try opening Dosbox from a command line, so it doesn't automatically close when Daggerfall crashes. Or I'm pretty sure you can edit the icon so Dosbox doesn't close on exit... I don't know. It's been a while since I used Windows to any extent.

DOSBox doesn't close on exit by default, and it sounds to me that it's what's crashing. Your frontend might be causing it, as DOSBox has always been really stable for me.

This bug can happen... at least it happens on my non-DosBox copy of the game.

It especially happens when I enter a village and ask someone where every single place is. I believe that overclicking the "Say" button to get info can lead you to a crash.

Save anytime, anywhere, at an interval of 5 seconds between each save. :P

@Cliffowrms, come to think of it, it does happen when I am asking multiple NPC's where a location or person is, so it could be that 'too many clicks'.

As to front ends going wrong; there is nothing that can go wrong. All they do is allow you to create a dosbox conf file through a windows front end of tab, left click, etc. Once this conf is set up, the front end puts a copy in the game folder. When you start the game from the front end it starts DOSBox that uses that conf file. At that point only DOSBox is running. The front end has done it's job. When I double click on Daggerfall in my front end, it is exactly the same as clicking on a DOSBox shortcut.

As to saving every 5 seconds, you'd think DOSBox could come up with a key combination to save the whole game code at that point. Sure, that might mean 60-100mb save files, which for DOS is a lot, but for games in general it's not! I have the feeling if that 'auto save' existed, we would remember to save more often! It wouldn't be difficult to save straight after the autosave, and on finishing the game for that period, just going to the Daggerfall folder and deleting that 100mb autosave - so it would only be there temporarily! :)
