Mature Content?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:48 pm

Oh Iam sorry that your parents forbid you to play morrowind and Falout couse of its more mature content , well too bad , I hope instead that they will go mature liek morrowindand Fallout , and even more , may be when you will grow up a bit you can ask your parents to play those games ... and all the others like GTA , RDR etc....

i never said anythin about morrowind.... i personally think morrowind did it well with the mature content, btw do i need to remind u it got a T ratin? also please try to read a bit more, when i was talkin about me not being able to play mass effect was years ago. i have played RDR and it was a fine game, but its mature content fits the style world rockstar makes.

Rockstar does what they do best, but i think bethesda could be a bit more clever with the way the implement mature content, i mean look at FO3 the cursing wasnt needed and it actually came off sloppy in it imo.

Oh boy, here we go......

If they added in something like the prosttutes in Red Dead Redemption then I'm all for it, it makes the world feel more real. But like in FO:NV? I don't really care. I don't go onto video games to get my kicks. Maybe that's just me but I'd rather they focus on something else. Besides kids play this game. We won't get anything out of it, all it'd be doing is making the game unplayable for kids.

All in all I don't think that mature content is needed, atleast not in obsence amounts. Enough to add realism, or to give a certain vibe when neccessary, nothing else.

I remember that morrowind had a bit more mature contents than Kid friendly Oblivion , Fallout had lot more Mature content and I hope this time Bethesda goes for thesame level of content maturity as Fallout if not even more , I remember red light district in Morrowind , nothing like that in Oblivion , While in Fallout well it was definitely more harsh game than the predecessors , I hope they keep going more and more mature content with gore and six ^^ hahaha ...

Hell yah don't even get me started New Vegas was one of the best games I have ever played in my life.

Mature content is not about gore and six.

Agreed - here's an article discussing http://www.gamesradar.com/f/mature-games-that-are-actually-mature/a-20081014113316766003

I would like mature themes - they drive more fascinating and/or compelling quests, they make you think - I enjoyed the sense of this with Morrowind, while they skirted around slavery it was a mature theme, slavery was used to subsidize the Dunmer economy, Dagoth Ur wanted to drive the occupied forces from Vvardenfell - would he have been so active if vivec had not agreed to allow the imperials in? was Azura just manipulating the player to get revenge on the tribunal? These were all mature themes to get the player to think, well if they wanted to that is.

Many of the in game books have very mature themes - be good to see some of them in action or as quests.

Well I don't really care for gore and six in Skyrim but it should be a bit darker than Oblivion, and it looks like its going to be.

Oblivion was too cheery and colorful for a place under attack by endless copy-pasted portals to hell :P

Mass Effect was banned in a couple countries and I am sure that others were too.

Mass Effect was banned in Singapore and it wasn't because of the six scene itself but because it was lisbian. Never mind that all this was completely up to the player. They could chose to play as a male, pursue one of the other romances or not do it at all. It isn't banned any longer though.

You think that Oblivion is not fit for a 12 year old? I have been playing the series since when Morrowind GOTY first came out. I am only 14 now so what does that say? Should I not play Skyrim?

No i don't think a 12 year old should play games like Morrowind and Oblivion, just like i don't think they should play Grand Theft Auto. It's advlt games and was not intended for children. As for you and Skyrim, that's hard to say. I don't know you, some 14 year old is more mature than others and i also think there is a difference between being 12 and 14 but as a finger rule, no i think you should be atleast a few years older. But as i said, for all i know you could be more mature than most 16 year olds so it's not that easy to say. But you are telling me that you can't see anything wrong with a 7 year old playing Morrowind?

I don't think you understand that just because a game is rated M it doesnt meant that people younger than 17 will not play it.

Oh i understand completely. Ofcause they are gonna play it, just like they are gonna watch movies they shouldn't. I was also a child once. But that's not Bethesdas problem. I think i was 8 when i watched Stephen Kings IT. I had nightmares the next six months. Still... it was totally worth it.

What if you were 12 when Skyrim comes out? Would you be like: "Oh! I am too young! I better stay away from this one!" Or would you get your parents to go to the store and buy it with you so that you can play it? Think logically in the eyes of someone under 17.

Ofcause i would. That's the way children is. They don't know what's good for them. That's why parental rights and responsibilities exist.

But that's not my problem, and it's not Bethesdas problem. I don't want a child friendly game just so everyone can enjoy it. Yes i know, i am very selfish. :)

The ERSB, PEGI and what else they are called, exist to guide, to give the parents an idea about what kind of game they are holding in their hands. The final decision is theirs to make. They know their children and should be able to judge whatever that kind of content is appropriate.

Besides, I am only saying that actual six has no reason to be in video games, it doesnt add to the immersion

And all i am saying is that i disagree. ;)

and it doesnt help sell it in counties that censor lots of media.

So the solution is to bow for cencorship? If everyone think like that, games will never get the same accept as movies and books.

not gratuitos , but very pertinent ^^ ... Ala Conan the Barbarian , 300 , or even Spartacus Blood and Sand ... style

Conan the Barbarian was not about [censored] and gore.

I get the feeling that Skyrim will have a lot more people and creatures trying to kill you and not be as 'safe' as Oblivion was.
If the place is having a civil war it means no one trusts anyone and more blood will be spilled. It'll be Oblivion lushness with Fallout3' attitudes. I expect more gore and violence.

As for six, 'bring it on' but I'm thinking that Skyrim is going to be a cold harsh place and definitely not suitable for nudity but those Nordic taverns will probably have lusty, blue eyed, blonds that are scantily dressed. Besides I really don't need to see a dead guard's 'junk' when I kill him and steal his armor - so I don't mind if they keep the shorts painted on.

I think people misunderstand what video games are.
Most people see the word "games" and think that this kind of media is only for young children.
But videogames today are more like a cinema movie and less like playing monopoly.
Perhaps we should discard the name "video games" and start calling this kind of media somehow else.

If that was the case, then people wouldn't start saying things like "OMG they put pormo at our children's games".
I mean books and movies with nudity and gore and mature stuff come out every single f***g day and nobody whine about them.
They only do it when it's about software.

I think that Bethesda should not fall at the mindtrap of thinking that videogames are supposed to be only for young children.I don't think they did it in the past,so I think they will not do it now.

Unless the mature content furthers the story or furthers the area you are in then why add it? You don't need six and gore to sell a game, if you do than the game isnt' very good to start with.

This sums up my opinion on the matter.

So, this post is going to be separated into two parts.

First, my opinion:

1. Nudity / six in Skyrim = fine and dandy. The game is rated mature, so in theory an M-rated game, as defined by the ESRB, is suitable for those ages 17 and up. Which means that nudity and six are things that just about every 17 year old is keenly aware of, if not having already experienced themselves. The humans (and the Elven, the Khajiiti and, yes, even the Orcish) have six (unless they simply divide into two separate beings... just imagine the Adoring Fan doing that) and, while the physical acts may not make it into the Bethesda-approved version (a.k.a vanilla) to simply ignore the sixual nature of the many beings in Skyrim (in the context of a Mature rated game) as if it didn't exist would be silly.
2. Gore and violence - see above for similar reasoning.
3. Obviously children are not intended to play Skyrim. It is up to the parents to decide if a game like Skyrim (in whatever form it eventually appears) is right for their child.
4. For all the sensible parents out there, there are those who are less than attentative to what games their child plays. These are often also the same parents who will try to sue a company for a game that has nudity in it, or excessive violence, or magic (the occult is possessing my baby!)

The Research (yes, with a capital R):

While there has been some research that demonstrates a (temporary) increase in aggression / less sensitivity towards real-life violence after playing video games, recent studies have found that the the effect of increased aggression found by previous studies / meta-anolytic anolysis is actually mediated by the amount of time gamers play a violent videogame (the longer the gameplay, the less the effect occurs) (source: KRCMAR, M., & LACHLAN, K. (2009). Aggressive Outcomes and Videogame Play: The Role of Length of Play and the Mechanisms at Work. Media Psychology, 12(3), 249-267. doi:10.1080/15213260903052257).

Abstract from the study:
Recent meta-anolytic findings (Sherry, 2007) suggest that the effect of violent video games on aggression tends to decrease the longer participants play. Therefore, it is likely that different mechanisms may be at work depending on the length of play. In this study, we employed a 4 (length of game play) × 2 (six) design to examine the effect of length of video game play on aggressive outcomes. Findings suggest that length of play may be curvilinearly related to verbal and physical aggression, and that arousal may mediate this response. Implications for our current understanding of the relationship between video games and aggression are discussed, along with directions for further research.

Oblivion was most certainly not "kid friendly" with the drug references, six references (yes they are there), and the outright gore with the static corpses in parts of the game.

While i would keep peoples religious belief out of this if i where you (we are not allowed to discuss that) i know what kind of people you are talking about and i agree.

They would like to ban splatter movies, violent Comics, Rock music and erotic movies and magazines aswell but most people don't take that kind of [censored] seriously. The only reason they can get away with it is because Games is the new kid in the class and the industry is so afraid of fighting back, well most of it anyway. The Gaming industry needs to grow out of that role. It's not something which is just given to us, we need to fight for it.

I'm curious of those who favor it.
Why would you want six and violence to be in Skyrim? What arguments do you have? Also please define six and violence. Do you mean six as an erotic theme or REAL six bang bang? Do you mean violence as gore (cut off heads and blood everywhere) or something else?

I only see comments like "Yes I want it!" and no real argument...

However, I do see some people who are against it, saying that it should only be in the game for the sake of something else (lore, quest, etc), not for the sake of itself. Some people are also saying that six and violence doesn't equal mature content. I agree with both of this.

six: anything to do with the existance of gender, and the interactions between same. No, this does not mean having a subgame of virtual nookie (anyone who needs that can find more than they could want in the various ecchi import games from Asia). It means having properly contexted visuals and events. Many forms of ritual magic either prefer or require nudity on the part of the practioner. People bathe, and amonst peoples who live in each other's pockets, as is typical of high northern latitudes (usually related to lack of building resources and simple sharing of heat), body modesty is not that great a deal. People sleep in outfits ranging from full length robes to skin, and all variants in between. prosttutes have always been a source of 'gray information'. And tend to dress in....advertising ways, lets say. That is just simple visuals. Add in side quests that are sixually charged; find a kidnapped girl, only to find that she ran away with the man she really loves, and her family is trying to basically sell her into marriage for their benefit. There are the ubiquitous bar maids....some of whom sell their charms freely, others who not only don't but won't....and how do you tell them apart at first glance? Of you're given a quest to assassinate a high ranking individual.....because of their sixual tastes. Which damaged or killed someone's child or sibling.

It isn't a desire to see Tamriel Playboy.....it's to have women who are more than men with lumpy tunics. And if the PC is a female, there should be some snark aimed at her. Women typically have to prove themselves even more than men do, in the areas of combat and the like. And some men are notoriously hard to convince. Such a setup could allow for intermittent events that could aid the immersion. Female warrior goes to a bar, gets into it with a patron who feels women should be either barefoot and pregnant, or on their backs begging for it. The possibilites for character development in those kinds of situations is immense.

Violence: More probably just a bit more gore. Not giblets.....but you really can't roast anyone in a pretty way (Half Life 2's burned corpses). The weapons being used are sharp and have significant mass. But you never see any damage. That is probably what is being talked about. A bit of blood decalling, so you can tell you, the other being, and maybe a wall or two have been there and done that. More dead bodies where they should be; if in an active dungeon, living people in various states of torture. Let's not pretty up what is downright ugly. But at the same time, not going too far. Enough graphic detail to get across that this is horrible and painful and cruel, but not enough to send people screaming. Same with the blood. We don't need fountains of blood a-la Kurosawa; but some indicator that damage and injury would be good.

It might reflect some sort of bad part of me, but I want to see Brothels in this game. There was a book in Oblivion that reference a "guild of prosttutes" (or something along those lines) but that was it, a reference. I would like to see an ACTUAL existance of this racy culture. It would make all the more sense for Nords to include them in their freezing cold province where they need to be kept warm.

Hasn't violence already been confirmed as being gorier? There was a screenshot in Gameinformer that actually had one character STABBING another (read "sword in other guy" not just jabbing" and there was blood everywhere. Finishing moves are in as well remember.

they should at least put effort into the "six scenes" voice its really bad in new vegas also they could do a easter egg reference to zevran in dragon age be having a bi elf assassin prosttute/romance but then again Im used to playing mass effect dragon age fable and all that stuff so I guess elder scrolls is playing catch up in romance department at least I'm trying to give idea's for easter eggs I mean some of those games easter egg elder scrolls so why not reverse easter egg them back lol but then again I just love tons of easter eggs.
