Hello

Very soon I plan on getting my computer cleaned out, as it is almost unusable because it's so slow and virus-ridden.

I plan on buying Fallout 3 for the PC and I might download the GECK.

This will be my first PC game thus I have some questions I would like answered if possible :)!

Do you need to know anything about programming for using the GECK?

Can I download Mods straight onto my game? (like a premade mod off of nexus)

And could you please tell me other helpful Info too :)?

Thanks :D!

EDIT: If my computer is unable to run Fallout 3, would anyone reccomend me to download it onto my netbook? It doesn't have a DVD Drive thus why I must download it.

I will post my specs of my netbook if someone wishes me to.

I've written a few tutorials on the scripting language used in Fallout 3, which you can find on my website http://www.cipscis.com/, although you won't need to look at this if you don't plan on making any mods yourself. Depending on the types of mods you might want to make, you might not need to know anything about this anyway. You don't need any prior programming knowledge to learn about this scripting language.

There are a lot of mods available online, and many of them are very simple to install. A few of them, particularly the larger ones, are more difficult to install, but if you read through the FAQ in the mods forum and the readme of any mods you try to install, you shouldn't run into too many issues.

I wouldn't recommend buying Fallout 3 via Direct2Drive because this prevents you from using FOSE, which is a utility which allows you to use more mods, and add more functionality to any mods you create yourself. If you want to buy Fallout 3 online, use Steam instead.

It definitely helps though. While the format is unique to the GECK, it has a lot of similarities to other scripting languages. But there's tons of things you can that don't require any scripting at all, and those things don't require any special knowledge. Just an understanding of how the GECK works. And of course an idea.

Most of them are extremely easy to install. Just unpack them, put them in your Data folder and activate them. You should grab a utility called FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager) to help you activate them more effectively though. Using only the game's built in menu isn't adequate when you get a lot of mods. Load order can be very important in order to avoid conflicts with other mods, and there's no way to adjust that by default. FOMM allows you do that however, among other things. Also get a tool called BOSS (don't ask me what it stands for, I don't know). It will automatically sort through a number of your mods and place them where they'll be least likely to cause any conflicts. It only works with a few mods at the moment but it will at least give you a starting point to work from.

BOSS-F stands for Better Olivion Sorting Software for Fallout 3. It is a port of the Oblivion utility, BOSS, to Fallout 3.
