should i use a mage type character this time round?

well it may be shocking but i have never used a character devout to magic(I have had the game 3 years ?). My characters have always been swordsmen or archers. I see the amount of magic and i think wow that seems fun.

so should i make a mage character?

Yes make a mage. I was like you when I first played, I played all warrior types. Then I tried magic and now I can't play without using it. I use a Mage class that is basically the same as the default mage class but i use blade instead of alchemy. You may want to try a battlemage on your first attempt with magic so you can be efficient with armor and weapons. http://www.elderstats.com/classes/843 This was the class I used for my first Magic Warrior hybrid feel free to use it, its great for a beginner.

It can be difficult at first if you don't know what you're doing

If you do know what you're doing then you can create the most powerful class (and one of the classes with the most variety of ways to deal with your opponents) of the game.

Definitely do a mage. I'd suggest that you make a complete break with your past characters by making a character who will not use any armor or weapons, otherwise there will be a temptation to slip back into your habitual ways of doing things.

Assuming you work with Destruction magic, you'll need at least two ranged spells, since some enemies have immunities. These will take the place of your marksman. You'll also need a couple of "on touch" spells, which will take the place of a melee weapon. One powerful (and often overlooked) offensive spell is Absorb Health (Restoration) which heals you while killing your enemy.

Illusion is also a very powerful magic school. You can cast a Command on one of a group of enemies, followed by Invisibility, and watch from the shadows while the enemies destroy each other. :)

Spells, potions, and enchantments provide your shielding. Elemental shield effects are very powerful and effective.

I can top that. I've been playing Morrowind and Oblivion for almost 9 years and I only just made my first pure mage a couple months ago. I had more fun than I thought I would. If you are on PC there's some great mods that add to the magic experience too.

I agree with the others: give mage a try. You might like it.

It may be difficult, but you should definitely try playing as a mage. I find it fun and challenging. At least give it a try.....

magic is easy to use, although annoying until you gain access to the spell creation altar.
