Recharging staff

Hey, I want to recharge my (shock) staff. Does anyone know the exact practical procedure to capture a monster/creature/NPC's soul into a soul gem? there by recharging my staff. do i need Mysticism as a major skill? or can i just buy a "soul trap" spell? I bought some empty soul gems in town, i don't know how to put the deceased soul into the soul gem. and do i have to put the soul in right away (after death) or should i wait for a while? and also how do u know what soul gem to use (grand, greater, common, and petty)? thanks

You need to cast Soul Trap first, and then kill the creature during the duration of the spell, with the empty soul gem in your inventory. Soul Trap is an apprentice-level Mysticism spell, which can be bought from several different Mages Guild vendors. Soul Trap scrolls can be found, but the best procedure is to either learn the spell, or, best of all, to acquire a weapon enchanted with soul trap.

Higher level creatures need higher level gems. Most of the creatures you encounter at low level will fit in a Petty or Common gem.
