[REQ] Subtle Shield Magic Effect

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:07 pm

Actually I quite like the effect of the overlap. It looks pretty good in motion.

One of the two sparkle effects that these shields have are going to be added back to this, to make it feel more magic-y, but not to the point where you're constantly annoyed by them in first person with multiple shields active..

Hmm. I have a fairly radical idea for this that involves manual editing of MIP maps, which I can't do with DxtBmp as far as I know. I have Photoshop CS5 but the NVidia plugin doesn't work with my 64-bit OS - does anyone else know a way to edit MIP maps directly, including the MIP maps of alpha channels, besides the NVidia plugin and Photoshop?

Can't help you out, but if that idea ever leads to something let us know. :)

The effect I'm looking for is basically the same animated shield bubble shape, only instead of being a whole bubble, only the edges of the bubble are visible and the center is completely clear. It would appear that way at close-ish range, but not at long range, but I figure it doesn't matter quite as much what NPC-sized objects look like when they're really far away from you... this would also mean that any shield you have around yourself would be pretty invisible in first-person view.

The way to accomplish this would be to black out the alpha channel on the fullsized texture, but leave the alpha on its MIP maps at normal brightness. I have already accomplished a similar effect using this technique, using it the opposite way (leave the fullsize alone, black out the MIPs) to create a shine effect for a moonstone, by applying the altered texture as a glow map on top of the base moonstone texture. Like the shields, this effect only works at close range, but it does work. Unfortunately I don't have pictures, but I did notice that it made the edges of the model's polygons look sharper, so this would need a really high-poly model to work as intended.

I've always used http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1499 in my games (I play a lot of Bretons) but this looks like a very interesting approach and one that I might like. I have to say, your screens look great, povuholo. Add me to the list of players who will be trying this out if you ever release it.

Yay!

Hey do you think you could do something similar for the Sanctuary spell too? I'm not sure what color you could make it though..maybe a seagreen like the icon?

ok after figuring a few things out it could be done but it would be a ESP that does is since all illusion spells seem to share the same animation. I'll toy with a few things and see how it goes

this is really cool. Any chance of someone making a new spell effect replacer (like spectacular sorcery)?

i had been pondering that after a request for a new or different sanctuary being that (i haven't played in a bit) i don't remember there being much of an animated effect. though it's looking like a big pain in the a$$ since i need to reformat before i can get MW to play again. (i have been getting povuholo to show me screens for the bit i have done)

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but I don't think the shields themselves were ever visible at all in first person? Just the particle effects, not the bubble.

Oh - well, maybe they weren't, in which case it'd be a nonissue. It's been a while since I've had time to actually play.

Any chance you could tell me how the levitation circles were inverted? (Assuming this was NIFskope and not 3D Max, and with that assumption come this: I'm trying to learn NIFskope this would be yet another learning a little about it)

in NIFskope
i set the rotation "Y" 180 (-180 same thing) on all rings and then set the translation "Z" to the level desired for each ring

there was a NIFskope tutorial thread on here some where

Not so sure about the swirling textures themselves but the sparkles look nice. How do they look in first person?
