Mod Compatibilities

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:32 pm

hi,

i consider myself still "new" to morrowind modding, so please forgive me if my questions are stupid or could have been answered by proper (and in my case probably lengthy) search.

today i downloaded a bunch of mods and i'm afraid they could conflict with each other.
the mods in question are:

Windows Glow (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=389, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7505, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7524, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8835, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8754, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7974) vs http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=609

then added

  • http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30186
  • http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6454
  • http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=299779&id=7959
  • http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7587
  • http://lovkullen.net/Emma/kids.htm

any experience with some or all of them would be appreciated.

the reason for my concern is the editing of cells, which is the one thing i avoided in my modding past. now, all of these mods promise to be great additions, so i really want to know how i can get them running all at once without problems :)
i only used TLM so far (and it's really great)

I don't see any immediate conflicts, but in some cases you might want to choose one over the other.
More Detailed Places and Dock Clutter might affect the same areas, so you might just want to pick one.

There's always the possibility that Atmo Balmora will conflict with anything else altering Balmora.

If TLM mods the way windows are displayed at different times of the day, then Windows Glow wouldn't be necessary.

You can always run your Load Order through http://code.google.com/p/mlox/wiki/Mlox to see what it says. It will inform of you known conflicts.

AFAIK TLM didn't mod the way Windows Glow did, so I think they're compatible.
You might want to check how Children of Morrowind fare with Atmospheric Balmora and Vivec Expansion, I don't know cause I'm not using CoM.
Both Dockside Clutter and MDP are compatible, as for some reason MDP didn't add anything to Ebonheart Port.

so, if two mods edit the same cell they conflict or not?
i imagine TLM editing the lighting let's say in an interior cell. there's also a window in the cell, which windows glow changes. isn't that gonna be a conflict then? (i'm confused...)

thanks for the tip with mlox :)
loaded wrye mash today, gonna figure that out. one tool more on my list (others are fps optimizer and a tool named http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php)

CoM is the first one to be kicked out... it's nice but no must-have in my opinion (it's remarkable how i never noticed the complete absence of children in morrowind before CoM)
i'm doing a lot of testing right now, if i find out, i'll let you know

Both Dockside Clutter and MDP are compatible, as for some reason MDP didn't add anything to Ebonheart Port.

good to know that :)

thanks for the help so far...

More then one mod can edit the same cell but they can't edit the same object or place objects in the same location without conflict.

oh, ok. i was under the impression that as soon as one identifier is counted in the list of changes of an .esp, then other mods editing something with this particular identifier will conflict with it (and cells are identifiers).

edit: the rest of my post below was my failure, due to some edits with the construction set and not cleaning up properly. now load order doesn't matter and the reception area is always as TLM-dark as i want it :)

i tried windows glow with TLM and here are some awkward results:
windows glow loaded AFTER TLM gave me a mournhold temple reception (and rethan manor interior as well, and probably others) much brighter than without windows glow.
so i switched the load order of the two, now the reception area is TLM-dark again (as expected). i ran around in mournhold a bit, too see if any lights didn't show up, but all the windows i've seen before were still there.

Well, there are conflicts and then there are conflicts. You can't avoid them. Conflicts are how mods work. Mods conflict deliberately with the vanilla game. This applies to conflicts between mods as well. You can use a smaller mods to selectively modify a larger mod by loading the smaller mod after the larger mod.

Then there are the malign conflicts. There are different magnitudes of these. Some will crash your game, some you'll never even notice. It took over six months for anybody to notice that leveled lists from different mods conflicted with each other. Our games were working fine, as far as we could tell. In fact, most of us were actually shocked when we were told that we had a problem.

So my advise is: you don't necessarily need to panic if you spot a conflict. You may find, after awhile, that you can live even with some malign conflicts. Everyone's tolerance for what constitutes an unacceptable conflict is different.

Myself, I treat conflicts the way I treat ants. If they're not on my food I leave them alone. ;)

hm...
nice attitude, i guess :)
maybe it's because the word conflict has this unpleasant undertone (and you read so much about it in guides)

leveled lists are on my list too, because i'm running morrowind advanced and want to add the npc additions listed above

what i read is that illuminated windows and windows glow kind of compete with each other, but i'm currently running both and it works fine so far, except for some windows added by illuminated windows not having the effect intended by windows glow. other than that, any arguments against using them both? or even adding interior daylight to the bunch?
