Fallout 3 won't start : Fallout 3

I see a lot of posts about FO3 crashing on startup, but I can't even get that far.
When I click either the launcher or the game exe, user or administrator mode,
absolutely nothing happens.
After installation, I patched the game to version 1.7, the patch process ended
with the error message "The ordinal 5360 could not be located in the dynamic
link library xlive.dll". At this point I updated to the latest version of GFWL.
Now when I try to start the game absolutely nothing happens, no error message,
black screen, nothing. I tried different compatibility setups, none work.
Any fixes to disable GFWL will not work since because I cannot even start the
game, no fallout3.ini file is found.
This is the retail FO3, I also have the Steam version of FONV which runs flawlessly.
Does anyone know what would cause the game to be totally unresponsive?

Intel coreI7-950 cpu, 8 gb DDR3 memory, Windows 7 home premium,
Nvidia GTX570 graphics card.

Please post a dxdiag:
Start - Run (if Vista, the search box acts like Run) - type dxdiag - hit Enter - "save all info" button - open txt file and copy/paste EVERYTHING here

And did you try the the Multi-Core Fix?:

Find your .ini file in your My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 folder ...it is the configuration settings file named FALLOUT

Open it with notepad and do a CTRL+F to search for the line

bUseThreadedAI=0

.....change it to =1

and below that line add this line

iNumHWThreads=2

I'm having the same kind of problem as the OP. Bought through steam I click Play on the launcher and all I get is a Black screen and I have to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to get back to my desk top

The HD 5100 cards are reissued 4500 versions, not related to the newer generation, and not well suited to gaming. You can expect to have graphics shortcomings from such a device.

I managed to get my game running now.

Go into you Program Files and find Fallout 3. Right click on the Launcher and click Properties, then click on Compatibility. Next click run this program in compatibility mode for: You'll get a drop down menu now just pick either XP service pack 3 or the last Vista service pack option. Before clicking apply also click the boxes to Disable the Desktop Configuration and also choose to run the program as administrator. Click apply and then the game should run when you start it through the launcher.

I know you don't wanna hear this but I would uninstall everthing, do a clean install and try to run the game without any patch installed first. If that works then you can try to install the patch. Also try to start the game with all settings set to low.

I see a lot of posts about FO3 crashing on startup, but I can't even get that far.
When I click either the launcher or the game exe, user or administrator mode,
absolutely nothing happens.
After installation, I patched the game to version 1.7, the patch process ended
with the error message "The ordinal 5360 could not be located in the dynamic
link library xlive.dll". At this point I updated to the latest version of GFWL.
Now when I try to start the game absolutely nothing happens, no error message,
black screen, nothing. I tried different compatibility setups, none work.
Any fixes to disable GFWL will not work since because I cannot even start the
game, no fallout3.ini file is found.
This is the retail FO3, I also have the Steam version of FONV which runs flawlessly.
Does anyone know what would cause the game to be totally unresponsive?

Intel coreI7-950 cpu, 8 gb DDR3 memory, Windows 7 home premium,
Nvidia GTX570 graphics card.
