Will there be just 3 Bethesda Fallout games?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:28 am

So back several years ago when Bethesda got the rights to Fallout I heard that they got the rights to publish 3 Fallout games. And 2 have been done already (Fallout 3 and New Vegas). Does this mean the next Fallout will be the last Bethesda Fallout? And will it be Fallout 4 or will it be another side story (like New Vegas)?

They only have the rights to publish 3 fallout titles last time I checked, so they only got one more to go.

When they bought the Fallout license, they bought the license for 3, 4, and 5. New Vegas was developed by Obsidian under the title of New Vegas, not Fallout 4. So likely we will get 3, 4, and 5 with a couple Obsidian titles. Depending on how that goes, they may continue the franchise, or sell it to a different company.

Didn't they first just get the license for 3 games then bought the whole license with the exclusion of allowing Interplay to develop Fallout Online and collect profits from their earlier games?

Like
1. Buy license to make 3 Fallout games.
"Hmm, you know what? We should buy the entire thing."
"Sounds like a capital idea!"
2. Buy entire license. (With the exceptions told above.)

I don't know, I'd have to look at the IP again. Though I really wish that if Bethesda does future Fallout games that they try to get Obsidian and other Black Isle remnants involved.

Yeah, what gabriel said. Originally, they were contracted to produce the games then were like, "Oh [censored], we're Bethesda and they're Interplay, lol" so they bought the intellectual property as a whole.

Thats basically exactly what happened as I understand it. Bethesda now owns the Fallout francise and has the rights to make as many as they want. No limitations except for collecting on the older fallouts.

Those of you aware of the details of Bethesda's court battle with Interplay know that while Bethesda does currently own the IP, and before this court battle could have made millions of games if they wanted to, the outcome of this court battle may result in Bethesda's purchase of the IP being null and they'll have to go back to their original deal of only producing 3 games, indeed making Fallout 4 the last one (according to Interplay). That's a scary thought for some gamers, and a wondrous thought for others, but until the court battle ends we wont know what's going to happen.

In all honesty I don't think Interplay is any better for developing Fallout games any more. Ever since Brian Fargo and Black Isle Studios left Interplay just got [censored]tier and [censored]tier.

bethesda owns the franchise outright, evidently if they don't let interplay do a fallout mmo then they only make 3, but bethesda doesn't even need to use the fallout name to make post apocalyptic games at this point, they could make a post apocalyptic game with another name and just make a new franchise, however i doubt they'll be losing the rights to fallout, for them to actually lose the rights to it after buying the franchise outright isn't likely.

Legally, NV counts as FO4. #2 of the three games Bethesda initially bought the rights to make. They did however later buy the rights to the entire franchise.

And IIRC, should Interplay win the current legal battle, then yes... Bethesda will only be able to publish one more Fallout game.

Bethesda owns the franchise, they just had a caveat that let Interplay possibly still make an MMO.

Even if Interplay wins the current battle Bethesda is still able to publish as many Fallout games as they want, they have the rights to the franchise.

Since this is an ongoing legal matter we don't allow it to be discussed here.
