How to merge dialouge?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:54 pm

Hi,

I have a problem with "CM Partners" mod. It adds a -conversation topic to each partner NPC, but i don't see it. When i was using Merged Dialogues from TESTool, the topic was visible, but I was told to not use this merged esp. Is there any other alternative to TESTool?

from what i understand, dialog is something that does not merge well. i had to do a reinstall of most of my plugins after a little mistake i made with TEStool recently, and this was the only way i could fix it.

for merging objects and leveled lists, i think wyre mash is preferred now.

The problem is that some other mod propably overwrite dialogue or changes it in some bad way, that I cannot see topic from CM Partners mod. When the dialouges was "merged", the topic was visible.

You can likely fix the problem by changing your Load Order.

Merged_Dialogs will cause many problems, even if it might fix a few.

This may be a bit late, but my util SmartMerger does dialog merging. It's not perfect, but it's certainly better than anything else I've seen. It should do just fine for plugins/masters that don't have contradicting information. (Biggest issue is I see dialogs get reversed In order, making all manner of merging annoying and sometimes impossible)

I can only hope by V2 that this will be perfected. I got it all in my head, but it will still take time.

SmartMerger seems the best tool for merging out there, but it's in command line, and it's really hard to do anything with it - i didn't manage to merge anything yet :( Is there any chances for GUI?

You can just open it with any text editor ...for Windows Notepad works fine. I personally just changed the file extenstion to .txt and opened it that way.

The absolute best way to merge dialogue is by hand manually for the exact same response. Otherwise, the construction set is fairly good at combining dialogue from different mods, providing one is experienced with dialogue editing and sorting.

The merge dialogue function in TESTool isn't going to be of much use to anyone, mostly because not too many mods edit the exact same dialogue response in a different enough way to warrent its use. Let's face it, if two different mods are editing an exact same dialog response, they are probably going to conflict in more than just dialogue.

Since this topic already exists, I'll use it. This is for the mod gurus.

I like to how to manually fix dialogues so that they "merge" without conflict. Is this possible? I know about the tools, TESTOOL is broken (for dialogue more so than even others). TESCS and TESAME will simply merge them without consideration of what condtion (or order) the dialogue is in, and Smartmerger still hasn't solved the relinking problem when mods change the same topic.

Here's what I think I know from my research:

- Topics will be eclipsed if they are encompassed within another topic (I.E. RAT wouldn't not show up if another topic was TASTY RAT BURGER or RAT SOUP or UNCOOKED RAT SWIRL ICE CREAM).
To fix this, topics need to be unique from other topics (even as simple as adding a "s" to a topic with make it different.

- The first and last entries of a topic should not be bumped down or up respectively. Since the first entry in a topic doesn't have a PNAM (previous entry) and the last entry doesn't have a NNAM (next entry) to link to, bumping them will break the chain since they won't link correctly (without dialogue-fu).
Theoretically, if a mod erroneously changes these you could "move" out of the first spot (or last) and that should fix the problem. (This is according to the forum exchange between JOG and Emma from a long time ago...found it while searching).

- You shouldn't even alter the first entry in Greetings 1 because it's crucial for a quest.
Same fix as above.

1. Is this info correct?
2. Are there any other quirks with dialogue I have to watch out for?
3. Will manually fixing up mods (as listed above) allow them to work together ok?
4. Can you use "_" in topics? ( I know I could easily test this one)
5. Does anyone have any special methods to merge dialogue (that works and isn't simply merging with TESCS)?

As I see it, dialogue merging is really the last mod merging frontier that can't be fixed easily. TESFaith moves landmasses (even if you have to occasionally fix a few things), Tes3Cmd cleans mods really well, Smartmerger merges all but dialogue, TESTOOL which is only really good for Merged Objects etc. I have thought that it may be possible to fix a mod that changes dialogue in one of the above ways, then maybe just maybe Smartmerger (and maybe even other tools) might properly be able to merge them.

Any hints tips...help? Appreciate it.
