How to mirror a WHOLE mesh in Blender?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:37 am

I have a large Interior Mesh which I need to Mirror to create it's opposite. I can Mirror pieces, but only the individual sub-object/group bits, not the whole Mesh. Even using Select-All does not work, as it only mirrors whichever object is selected manually... Is there a way to select, then Mirror, EVERYTHING on screen in one smooth go?

Are you in object or edit mode? I ask because when I did http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32203 all I did was select everything while in object mode and made the adjustments. It worked fine. *shrug*

My idea was going to be add all of the objects to a group then mirror that, but I can't seem to get it to work.
I couldn't get http://blenderartists.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-81457.html trick to work either.
Would it be possible to model one half, then duplicate it and rotate 180?

If you get no response here then try asking at a blender community like blenderartists.org or the #blenderQA and #blender channels on the FreeNode IRC network.

No matter what I select, or how, only the last thing I left-clicked on mirrors :(

Which model is it? I can try and see if I can do it.

The Mesh is the Bruma Upper Inn Interior (I can't check right now, but it should be BrumaUpperInnInt.nif)-- it's a large room, with a fireplace, staircase and upstairs: I want to flip the whole thing, to create a mirror room on the opposite side of the building, if possible. Thank-you for offering to help :)

It should look something like this :

O
OO
O

And what I'd like is:

O
OO
O

So, to get this straight, in http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b9/bchick222/request.jpg you want option 1 and not 2 correct?

I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight!

Yes, ideally Option One :)

if it ends up more like

O O
OO OO
O O

(i.e., Mirrored along a plane adjacent to the Mesh, rather than the centre) that should be fine, too.

Thank-you for your help :)

Try this out. All I did was mirror it in Blender like you would anything (although it was mirrored along the y axis.. if you were trying to do the x axis it didn't look like it did much). I wasn't able to test it though so let me know if it looks ok and/or the collision is ok.

-edit-
For some reason my links aren't working right now... just copy and paste I guess.

Thank-you. I've only looked in NifSkope right now (not at my CS PC, so no textures or anything), but it looks perfect :) I'll confirm later, but looks fine :D

OK, ther's a slight issue: all the faces seem to be reversed: textures from inside are on the outside... I saw the option to fix this recently, but can't seem to find it-- if you just tell me what to look for, I should be able to do it myself :)

OK, I found how to do that, but hit one last issue-- most of the Faces invert fine, except for bits on the Support Beams, and the interior of the Fireplace... They all seem to be part of a much larger Mesh which incorporates everything, and inverting the textus stil has no effect-- here, the textures seem to be completely gone...

So, after some fiddling about, I had another go at the Mirroring, and managed to get it working myself :D (Yes, I'm very pleased about that! [Laughs])-- the problem is, now everything LOOKS fine in Blender, but I CANNOT Export the .nif file... When I try, Blender either finishes instantly, producing an empty .nif, or takes about 30 seconds, and produces 2 parts of the Mesh, instead of the whole thing... any ideas?

If you want you can send me the .blend file you have or I can look at it again... not sure why the normals would have flipped haha.

This is normal in Blender after you use any of the mirror function - as everything is mirrored then, normals included. You just need to select mirrored mesh, go to edit mode and flip normals (W,0).

That would be great :D Can you PM me your e-mail? I'm going to take another look at the Mesh myself tonight.

I'm so sorry! I went to the beach this weekend and never checked this! I have tomorrow off of work though so I will look at it in the morning... I guess it is normal behavior from the mirror as I have seen it happen before. I don't know why I didn't think of it this time. I will send you the revised copy tomorrow!
