Getting alot of lag in Morrowind

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:38 pm

Hey all I'm getting an unbelievable amount of Lag in Morrowind and I'm not sure why or how to cure it. I know my computer can handle it, I've got Oblivion running with Quarls Textures Pack III at full at a constant 25-30 fps. Anyways I'm not sure what all you need to diagnose the issue, so I'll just post the LO MLOX gives me, and whatever else you may need. Thx!

You've got a few duplicated esps which are probably contributing to lag issues.

* Key Replacer plugins:
_010_ Key Replacer Tribunal.esp
_011_ Key Replacer Bloodmoon.esp
_012_ Key Replacer MW.esp
_013_ Key Replacer Trib & BM.esp
If you have all three bethesda masters loading, you only need 013 - remove the others from your load order.

* Better Clothes:
_026_ Better Clothes_v1.1.esp
_027_ Better Clothes_v1.1_nac.esp
Only use one of these - since you're using New Argonian Bodies, you'll probably want to avoid shirts giving the females briasts so use 026 (counter-intuitive to it's name, the 'no argonian change' (nac) version gives all females shirts with briasts).

* Unique Finery:
_029_ UniqueFinery.esp
_030_ UniqueFinery_NoRobe.esp
I'm pretty sure you should only use one or the other, not both.

* NEDE plugins:
_033_ NEDE WGI patch.esp - only use this if you also use Wakim's Game Improvements (which does not appear to be in the load order you posted).

* Grass plugins:
_021_ Grass_AC&S.esp
_022_ Grass_TR_TI&M.esp
Grass plugins can cause massive lag as well as cause collision issues if they are intended for MGE animated grass only. You should deactivate them after using them with distant statics creation - they're usually only needed for MGE's distantland file creation. MGE's animated grass is much easier on framerate than placing the actual grass meshes in-game, which is what will happen if you leave these plugins active in your load order for game play.

Make sure to update the mlox base file to the most recent version and run mlox again to be sure you haven't missed any other redundancies. ;)

[edit] correction to Key Replacer plugins. Also note that the latest beta version of http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1163185-repairing-the-cogs-of-morrowind-24/ (http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1163185-repairing-the-cogs-of-morrowind-24/page__view__findpost__p__17180757) has an option to force female argonians to only use the male versions of clothing - if you decide to use MCP and that option, then you can forgo using the nac version of Better Clothes and just use Better Clothes_v1.1.esp.

[edit2] revised the Better Clothes explanation.

Other things to help with "Lag" in general. (technically, low FPS. Lag refers to delays in information between networks. ie: on-line games)

- Make sure your Music Slider (in the in-game menu) is not fully muted all the way to the Left. Turn it up one notch to the Right if so.

- Open your Morrowind.ini file and change this line: Max FPS=240 to Max FPS=60
This often improves the frame rate flow, and improves the functioning of some menu buttons. And the human eye cannot see more than 30-40 FPS anyways.

- Try the http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php on your Morrowind.exe. It seems to help for a lot of people. (Install after installing the Code Patch)

- Disable shadows. Many computers can't handle them at all.

- The http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=utilities.detail&id=22 has some tricks to help stabilize FPS.

- Keep in mind that Morrowind makes poor usage of Hardware. It's an old game.

Nah, I would say people can easily notice a difference up to several hundred fps (see http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm)
With the wagon wheel effect http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagon-wheel_effect it's kind of unlimited how much fps you need.

But Morrowind is playable at 15 fps. It's not Quake.

With loads of mods and MGE XE (which is in development and which right now forces you to have max view distance) I get 8-13fps my ATI HD 5770 :(

Actually, the NAC version (No Argonian Change) is the the one with briasts showing.

Lag in single player games can be caused by
-Low fps
-Vsync
-triple buffering
-LCD display
-working SLI/CF cards

all of the above always contributes to laggines if enabled or present. I think you just installed too much stuff for the PC to handle. I get 30fps in Oblivion, but 20fps in Morrowind in many places for example.

Ah right you are - the naming of that file always throws me.

Fixed my post.

Do you use an animation replacer mod?

I've got a lot of lag when I used AnimKit for some reason.

Yes I'm using Dirnae's animation kit.
I did all the above suggestions and am still only getting 3-4 fps in game :(

First of you need to deactivate all your mods and see if that fixes it. If it doesnt then at least you don't need to take the mods into consideration, you can move on to testing new video card drivers, messing with .ini settings, etc. If deactivating all mods fixes it you activate maybe 4-5 mods each time until it starts to lag again and you can easily iron out which mod that is causing it.

(Smiles).
Last time I went to the cinema, people weren't complaining the 25fps was slow.

Cinema and games are completely different though, you're comparing apples to oranges ;) Movies in above 30 FPS or 60 FPS (if you've ever seen it) looks extremely smooth compared to 24 too.. Syncing hz to the movie's framerate makes wonders too. You can clearly see stuttering at 24 FPS if you dont have it locked to the same Hz, at least in "panoramic" scenes.
