Depending on what level of injury gets passed through, I'd assume that if the environment reachs into such extremes as getting frostbites or poking a hand (or paw, or whatever) into boiling water something will pass through. Basically conditions extreme enough to actually damage someone exposed to them. They might not the same as say a weapon wound or a broken bone, but they can be considered injuries as well.
I haven't read the books so I an't tell if there's example of this, but it would seem logical that something life-threatening would pass. Through the accuracy of the transmission of pain might affect this. If it can pass things such as 'my arm got poked through' or 'my leg is broken', things like a major sunburn, a heatstroke or a frostbite are likely to pass.
Milder conditions probably would still pass through as feeling miserable, but without providing clues at the cause.

Yes, those would be suitable causes for the emotion to transfer.
