TEchnical Issues

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:36 pm

I installed G.E.C.K. and started it up and it said "Cannot Start: Missing File: d3dx9_38.dll." The 1.5 update didn't fix this, but I knew what the file was anyway. Its the "Direct X 9 Direct 3D" file and downloaded it here.. :brokencomputer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?familyId=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displayLang=en
Now when I start it, it says "libvorbisfile.dll" was not found...The 1.5 update didn't fix that because it has been saying ( since before the first problem ) Missing or Invalid Registry/INI entry....then..It says OLD FILE does not exist.. :brokencomputer:

PLEASE HELP

You need to install the GECK to your Fallout 3 directory. That will fix both missing file issues.

You do not need that file that you downloaded.

Unless your DirectX is out of date or non-existent.

Yea, you did not install the geck to the correct place. Install it to the Fallout3 folder. Do you have it through steam or not? I can direct you to either exact folder if you cant figure it out. If you dont have steam, by default its "C:ProgramFiles/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout 3" if you have steam, its "ProgramFiles/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Fallout3" If you place the geck in the wrong spot, it cannot run since it has to load the fallout 3 stuff and thats how it knows where it is.

Yep, you need the game to use the GECK. It requires access to the games ESM files since none of the assets are included in the GECK.

No, because that would be piracy and requesting those files will get you a ban from these forums or at the least a severe warning.

In any case, how would you even test the mod without the game?

I am just curious. Why would you get the geck and try to use it if you dont own the game? That makes little sense.

I didn't know that it required the game. Most of them don't.

But why would you want it if its made to edit the game and cannot be used for anything else? Its not an editor in general, its an editor FOR Fallout 3.

But create what? 99.9999% of what you make in the geck uses things from Fo3, which means you need it. :/

Aren't those files just data files..ie..resoure files...not files that run the game...ie..the game engine..?

Yes but you need to buy the game to have them. Or the engine. Its not like TF2 or Counter Strike or HL2 where you get the engine and can make stuff and use most of the files and resources as free. Its not open source. You actually have to buy the stuff to use it. And you do need the game engine to run the geck.

Actually, ALL editors need their associated games. You can not use the TF2 editor to make anything for TF2 if you do not have TF2. Same for any game.

Editors uses the assets that are packed into compressed files, and without the game, you can not access these assets, because they are not on your system.
