Thinking of buying Fallout 3.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:24 pm

Hey,

I'm a huge fan of Oblivion and so I've been thinking of purchasing Fall out 3 Game of the Year edition. I haven't played the previous fallout games, will I be missing any thing?

I've been watching the reviews from critics and it looks like a interesting game and seems every one pretty positive about it.

My only concern is the combat. I have a feeling this game wont feel like a shooter in some respects. You know what I mean? I'm sure the RPG elements will be great like Oblivion or Mass Effect 1. But wont really have that solid FPS feel to it. (I hope that makes sense.)

Game of the year edition worth it? $29.99

Thanks for the opinions in advance.

Not really, Fallout 3 holds very little relavence to the plot of the first two games in terms of continuation, it just takes some elements of the first two (not necessarily a bad thing).

That said, its never a bad idea to pick up the orginals and give them a spin at some point.

And for the most part, those reviews are correct.

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. In many ways, I prefer Fallout 3's FPS style to other actual FPS games, but thats just my opinion.

Heck yes. I got my copy for $60 about awhile ago, and it remains as one of the best purchases I have ever made. Fallout 3's given me a least a year and a half of solid playing and I'm still not really bored (I did however switch over to the PC a couple months ago).

Fallout 3 does not have to many references to the Originals but there are some, the game fills you in on why the Brotherhood are in DC. If you like the TES games chances are you will love Fallout 3. So I say go for it. Still If you are interested in the Fallout Universe and don't mind playing older games you can get, Fallout, Fallout 2 and Tactics in a pack for something like $15-$20. So if Fallout 3 GOTY is only $30 you can get Four fallout games for under $50. By the time you finish playing them, New Vegas will have all its DLC out :foodndrink: (depends on how long it takes you to play games lol)

FO3 is a fantastic game. Well worth the $29.99
The FPS elements are not perfect but it more than makes up for that with the free roam, exploring and story. its a must buy!

At my Gamestop they've got a deal where they sell games for 99 swedish crowns, and a Fallout 1+2+tactics pack is one of those. That would be like $15 for the old fallout games, and $20-30 for FO3 GOTY edition unless you live in sweden. for $50 you'd get all FO games up until NV. DEFINATELY worth it. So much potential - but you need to be into "that kind" of games to really pull hundreds, if not thousand of hours out of it.

I really prefer sword and sorcery crpgs and am not really an end-of-the-world and guns man, but FO3 is so much better put togther and polished than Oblivion that FO3 wins easily. FO3 doesn`t even really need that many essential Mods like Oblivion did. However, there are mods such as FWE that will allow you to adjust weapons so your aim is more perfect like a standard shooter. However, it still is a CRPG like Oblivion and just as with Oblivion if your skill is low your sword will miss, it`s the same with FO3. Even if you think you`re spot on, you can still miss if your skill is low... but it feels better because anyone can think they`re spot on and still miss with a rifle or pistol. It`s a bit more difficult to believe you missed with a sword in a melee fight.

Short version: yes, buy it, especially since it isn`t Steamed either, like Vegas is, which means the game is YOURS.

I love Oblivion, but I have only been able to do three playthoughs without it feeling very repetitive. However, I can play FO3 over and over again. Especially since you can truly make an evil character in FO3. 30 bucks is definitely worth it for the GOY edition.

You should definately get Fallout 3 GOTY version. :)

It is awesome. :D

So addictive. The combat and view can be third or first person.

The combat is good. You use V.A.T.S or freestyle.

VATS zoom you in to target specific body parts.

If you wanted a fps way you could put it in first person.

You should definately get it. :)

Agree you should definitely buy the GOTY edition. You get 5 DLC's and the game for the price of one game basically.

I also moved from Oblivion. Personally, I liked more Oblivion, but I just burned it. Fallout 3 is also a jewel and we need something to do for the time they finish Skyrim  . Plus, maybe Skyrim means to buy a new PC or play with crapy graphics. :violin: .

I dont think that Fallout 3 is a truly FPS game. I think it "looks like a FPS game". If you like that, you can play as it is. If not, just add some mods. CONCLUSION: Yes maaann, buy it!

I agree with all present sentiments, get the game for sure. Play it through vanilla and enjoy the heck out of it, then let yourself run wild with mods and see the game in a whole new light.

$30, yeah, its worth it. The Pitt and The outpost DLc's are really good.

I'm almost done with all the DLC. Won't be playing it anymore after that.

I jumped straight into Fallout 3 based on the opinion of a GameStop employee and havent regreted it since. I have yet to play 1 and 2 and I've played through 3 and New Vegas and love them. I actually had this same thing with me except flip flopped. I didn't know if Oblivion would work for me but it has and I havent played the others and I still love it and am considering Skyrim.

You're mistaken. You're probably thinking of the VATS combat system, but you don't have to use that if you don't want to. In fact there's mods that will turn it right off if you're playing on a PC. Without that, the combat will be just like any FPS. And at $29.99, it's definitely worth it. You'll be able to play for well over 100 hours with just the vanilla game, which is a pretty good entertainment investment. And if you're on a PC, there's all sorts of mods that can extend that to hundreds of hours.

Fallout 3 can be played any way that you prefer really, concentrating on RPG elements by questing, or focussing more on the combat FPS elements sorting out bandit type locations, actually FPS is mixed in with the RPG elements as well. Fallouts are apocalyptic wasteland survival scenarios so there is bound to be a good mix of both combat and RPG.

Fallout 3 does FPS particularly well if you avoid using VATS (vector assisted targeting system)(think that is the correct interpretation). Personally I don't use VATS and play on very hard, use moderate weapons, armour and no healing boosters, and that gives me an excellent challenging game FPS-wise, the AI is very good as are the tactical play, the RPG is also excellent, the quests varied lengthy challenging with not always simple choices.

You will not miss anything by not having played the earlier Fallout games, they were made a long time ago.

I've been tempted to get Fallout 3 GOTY for my Xbox 360. I have Fallout 3 PS3 + all the DLC from PSN, but the game runs like crap on the PS3. I really never enjoyed the DLC to its fullest cause every character I made could only do one or two before the game bugged out. I'm still working though New Vegas and it looks like more DLC will be showing up shortly, so maybe I'll wait until Fallout 3 GOTY drops to the $20 range (I have a Gamestop card for $30).

I haven't played on the PC yet. I bought the 360 version a month ago because I prefer sitting on the couch with a controller. About 100 hours later and I still have a ton of places to explore. Not bad for less than the price for a dinner for two.

Spoiler
My wife looked at Fawkes and asked who is that ugly guy!
