Q: Message speed, and spell icons, DAGGERFALL

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:17 am

Hi there,

First off, is there a way to change how long it takes for text at the top of the screen to disappear in Daggerfall? So many times, a little message has popped up, I look at it, then it disappears forever.

Second, I've noticed on Shock, in my spellbook, there's an icon on the right(pictured below, with the cursor pointing to it) that I can change if I click on it. I can't find anything about what it actually does.

Actually, that brings me to a third little question: I'm not generally satisfied with the default BattleMage class in most games, so I made my own custom one(balanced it between combat and magic), and every time I try to cast anything, it just says I don't have enough spell points. Did I miss something in the character creation that prevents me from casting anything, or do they just have fairly high costs(I've got 34 spell points at the moment, as you can see in the screenshot). I'm one point lower than the default BattleMage class in Intelligence, so many there's something else I need to do?

When making a custom class that will be a spellcaster, you have to add the Increased Magery advantage to increase your spellpoints to a usable number. You will be able to choose a multiplier against your INT for extra spellpoints. Unless you are using magic as a backup or distant supporting role, you will want to pick the 3X multiplier.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'll have to look into modifying/hacking/cheating/whatever my character to add that, otherwise there are a few hours of gameplay I'll have to get through.

Edit: Well, I went through all the save editors on UESP, and not a single one of them would let me add Increased Magery to my character. I created a new character with that, then opened that save in DAGHEX, but nothing was Enabled in the Advantages & Disadvantages settings. The closest I can find are "Spell point 1", 2, and 3. Not one of them is Enabled on my character that I definitely chose the 3X Increased Magery advantage on.
And none of the other editors even have Advantages & Disadvantages.

That icon doesn't mean anything for instant damage spells, but for spells with a duration the icon will show on-screen for the duration of the effect. The icon can be changed to make the spell easier to identify.

Unfortunately, I know of no simple way to cause that txt to appear for longer by default.

If using DOSBox, and you have quick reflexes (or know when to expect the message popup), you can pause the program by pressing Alt-Pause/Break. (suggest changing to a more convenient / quickly accessible key combo to facilitate this tactic) This will at least give you as long as is desired to read the message before un-pausing the program with the same key press.

Though, I do not recall the messages flying away so quickly on the genuinely slow equipment that I used to play DF on, back in the day. [133 MHz CPU] :celebrate:

Forget the editors. Creating multiple new characters and playing them for a short while is a good way to get a feel for what works for you, and what does not. Do not expect perfection. In fact, when first creating custom classes, expect error.

In regards to Advantages and Disadvantages: (in case you do not know) If you want to see yours, press F5 to open the character info screen and click the History button. If you have any A or D, they will be shown here, before your biography. Here is where you should be able to see your "Increased Magery 3X Spell Point" advantage. (if you actually have it)

In addition, click on INT from the same F5 char info screen. You should see "X out of Y spell points available" ... where Y is 3 times your Intelligence (INT).

(If you do not see the two above items, something is wrong. Perhaps a mistake was made upon custom class creation..?)

If one wants to create the flavor of the Battlemage class, 2x Intelligence might be more apt. That is a role-playing decision that should be considered. Such an option that is available in Daggerfall might not be familiar to many gamers. :dancing:

Hiya Scampers! I don't think I have seen you around for some time.

Indeed.. the free release of Daggerfall has brought me out of retirement, so to speak. Seeing all these Daggerfall posts made playing through the game again pretty much irresistible. :)

Ok, so I had another look at the Advantages page in DAGHEX. Turns out I needed to disable all the spell ones(the ones that represent the various Increased Magery choices), except for the 3x.

So, that's all my questions answered now. Thanks very much for the help.
