Smithing Armor - so important to me

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:40 am

I noticed that playing Oblivion, one little pleasure of the game was to always upgrade my armor. However, the vanilla version didn't have much diversity because the end goal for many was to wear glass armor.

What I would like to see is first a bigger difference between the pros and cons of wearing light armor and heavy armor. So you really have to cater it to your character.

With the ability to smith your weapon seems to exist, it would be great to smith your armor. It would be nice if combining materials, jewels, dye (taken from plants), and maybe few other things would result in an armor type and color. That could creat quite a lot of different combinations. It will also add quite a bit of adventuring to the game, if you needed to buy or find scrolls that were "blueprints / templates" for the armor. Then for example, using a flawless diamond would yield a stronger armor than using a rough diamond.

What do you guys think?

I'd assume that since smithing is in, we can both smith armor and weapons, and I do hope that's the case. Even so, I don't think there's much information on how smithing works, but I don't really expect to actually be able to create our own custom armor designs. Rather, I think it will probably be like the crafting options in Fallout 3 and New Vegas in that you have certain generic items you can make, if you have the right ingredients, with the smithing skill probably being what determines what items you can actually make, but maybe Bethesda will surprise me.

Or there is no limit to what you can make and smithing skill determines the quality of the item you build. I'd prefer that because then you'd be able rebuild the same item throughout your skill progression and it would get better each time.

I hope it's not just another name for armourer. I would like it if it actually made you possible to customize armour and weapons to a certain degree.

That's true, but I was refering to the basic mechanics behind smithing. I'm sure you can enchant the items you make as well, though that would be handled by enchanting. I'm guessing that how it works is that with smithing, you create the base item, and then can enchant it like you would a normal item afterwards.

Oh crap, hadn't thought of that. If smithing is the new name for armourer I can see there being a LOT of disappointment.

I'd like to be able to customise the appearance of my armour and weapons. It'd definitely add a lot of immersion to the game, if you could forge a sword that's personal to you and completely unique.

It'll be all sighs and moans if this turns out to be true and I think the probability is quite existant.

An ever expanded armorer would provide an extra incentive to do that skill, but I would do it anyway.

It is definately.

Oh darn, dissapointment......not really.

I'm not expecting much from this system. But if they have certain things like in customization, I'll be surprised.(in a good way)

A great Mod was Midas Magic. The cool part was how you could find the right items to create a spell. Especially the usage of jewels. When I played Oblivion Vanilla, it felt that a flawless diamond was worth nothing. With the Midas Magic mod, I get so excited when I find any kind of Jewel.

I love all the random stuff that Bethasda puts in their game, but it would be nice if it had a bit of a reason to use it.

Anyhow, back to the armor... well, I'm hoping for a big surprise, and since I have already decided to get this for the PC over the Xbox360, I can still hope that some modder will create an option like this. How awesome would it be if then modders would built different templates that we can use in this Custom Armor Mod?
