Next Player Character an Android?

How long has the Institute been up and running?
I think I remember something from New Vegas about it existing pre-war.
In that case they've had like 200+ years to develop and perfect androids.
But in that case I want to see some true marvels in Commonwealth.
It should be so high tech that even high tech considers it high tech.

No....

Thats not to say that a voyage of self discovery for a robot wouldn't be a great story, but I don't think its very fallout.

Fallout is about humanity after the bomb (and its two new subspecies).

I agree with this.

Wouldn't the great war have hindered their progress more than significantly due to lack of recources (I don't believe they'd be completely self sufficient)? Meaning, even if it is a prevwar installment there wouldn't have been too much progress after the war and the tech wouldn't be all that much advanced than what they had before the war.

Hmm, maybe they sent out the robots they had to collect resources?
And when coming into contact with the outside worlds people they enslaved them to work in mines and stuff to collect more resources.
One of the reasons for the synthetics could be to replace the slaves.

That's possible, but it woudl still be quite an effort to start really progressing without a working societys help in manufacturing certain parts and materials that just don't lay around ruins or that could be mined. Nice idea though, a somewhat cyberpunkish feel to it which I like.

But, I don't particularly like the thought of androids/synthetics in Fallout because it kinda goes against premise of the tech the universe evolved to. Vacuum tube computers, clunky and heavy robotors, and no any particular miniaturisation or microchips. I think that the idea with the institution should be kept on a leash to not overdo it, keep it simple and with a premise of pointing towards a possible future instead of a certain one. Depict a "design in progress" scene with a sense of uncertainty, so to speak, instead of "mass production already ongoing". Something like that would be my preference if the idea of androids is expanded upon (and if it is, there needs to be an electric sheep somewhere).

I know that it has been said before but I would like to see an ES style character creation system. In the Fallout PnP you could choose to be a Human, Super mutant, Half-mutant, Ghoul and Robot.(You could also choose Dog and Deathclaw, but they probably wouldn't work in a game.)

I think it would be good to be able to choose your race in a Fallout game and it would definately increase the replay value.

So long as its canon I wouldnt mind it personally. Acceptable ones would be Human, Ghoul, Super Mutant, and Androids. Anything else would feel forced and kinda lame. It would also be nice if each had sub categories or classifications which can add variety to your play style for Mutants you could add the Nightkin as a sub category, while humans could have Tribal, Raider, or Waste-lander as a sub category ghouls could have something as simple as young ghoul or old ghoul. (Leaning in the side of having a fresher ghoul could reduce likely hood of going feral in the longterm as well as less benefits of radiation in exchange for higher intelligence and charisma due to less physical and mental deterioration. While an old ghoul would be stronger and more combat/survival savvy then a newly formed one.) Tribal, Raider and Waste-lander could affect the way people see you in the wasteland as well as your base skills would get a boost.(Example: A tribal would be more effective with melee and unarmed as well as a more apt survivalist than say a Raider who is highly resistant to poisons and addiction due to chem abuse but physically less apt than the tribal. A waste-lander longterm is more balanced but is much more diplomatic than either tribal or raider since a waste-lander is more civilized but they are weaker health wise and much more skilled from range using small guns.) The Super Mutant and Nightkin breed would be similar except that Nightkin are built for stealth and melee while a regular Mutant would be more effective with explosives and guns.(Mutants would be more civil gaining a slight bolster to speech while a Nightkin's schizophrenia would cause them to be irrational and violent causing sudden uncontrollable fits of rage that can hinder you or benefit you depending on the situation.

If it worked somewhere along those lines above i would definitely love the idea.

I'd prefer if the character background was mostly a clean slate like the Courier (though that might be changed with DLC, I hope Ulysses has a minor place in the story and doesn't invalidate the past I made for my character already), and I'd like that to continue. Choosing races would be great, so android should be an option if you are on the East Coast. Though, if a lot of energy is spent on fleshing out each race I would prefer that content wouldn't actually suffer because of it, but yeah.

well actually ulysses is going to have a huge part cuz he knows your past and every thinng

Then hopefully he doesn't know of things that could wreck most of peoples made up background stories :P Ulysses could have been someone you met a few years ago, and that you worked with and something went wrong. But not like you grew up with him or anything, maybe you roleplay someone who grew up by himself.

I don't see how other NPCs talking about him means that he knows a lot about you. It just means he knows who you are.

well Johnson Nash said it looked like you had a history with him and that when he saw your specific name on the list that he told them to give you the job so my guess is ya he knows a lot about you. It doesnt mean hes gonna break the role play just that he might have crossed your path before the mojave wasteland in general.

Could go both ways. Presuming the current popular theory that the institute is MIT, Post bomb on one hand there is the obvious loss of immediate resources and having to face new questions about how to feed the faculty/students, etc.

On the other hand, as the bombs fall a lot of the old rules disappear. Academics can now spend more time on their scientific projects than teaching (there might be the odd few that welcome the removal of intrusions from the outside world). Rules on Morality change - the staff don't have to worry about public relations and the general (US) population thinking their experiment ideas are "icky" or Immoral - they can just do it (presuming they can convince their fellow faculty members which is probably easier). Students no longer have term breaks and probably find themselves tied up more in their professors projects than traditional University learning.
