Mods are such a personal choice, the folks here can get a little annoyed when you ask, "what's the best" without reading the guides.... if you still have questions after those two links, try to be a bit more specific.

This coming from someone who has annoyed folks here. :)

Best get an idea what you want to change or improve in the game. Some questions to ask yourself:

Do I want to change the graphics? If so, where?

Do I want more quests?

Do I want companions to travel with? Do I want them to have individual personalities, or just come along for the ride?

Do I want a greater diversity of monsters?

Do I want a tougher game? An easier one?

Do I want to own a home? If so, where?

Do I want more businesses in any towns?

...and other questions like that. Then check out the Morrowind mod categories on PlanetSpyElderScrolls, and see what's offered. TES Nexus is good, too, but they're more of an Oblivion host--still, they have very extensive discussions of mods that can clue you into what's good, and what isn't.

Then, if you still have questions about what to get, come here and ask in the Mod forum. :)

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1060141-mod-recommendations-for-new-players/page__p__15392814#entry15392814 - has links for all the tools and patches you'll need, and links to lists of favourites mods, and advice on how to find mods.

Check the Pinned Threads in the Mod section of the forum to see the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/106063-morrowind-mods-faq/page__view__findpost__p__1772641
It will explain how to install mods.

EDIT: and since you have Vista, check http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/781497-vistawindows-7-problems/ Specifically, just change the Install Location to bypass all problems.

Someone gave me this a few days ago, and I love it. I can't believe how beautiful the game works. PM me if you decide to use this, since when it comes to MGE part at the end, I had nothing but troupble but still got it working, so if you need help, PM me when you get to that part.

I spent the better part of the wee hours of the morning following almost every thing in Knots' guide, and all I can say is "Wowie Zowie" !
I didn't think I could cut it with only 2gigs of ram, although I have an Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT.........I was very conservative during the first distant lands rendering wizard, and it ran liked greased lightning....so this morning I bumped up the options and I'm getting 10-12 FPS in Balmora. I can live with that and I can see Red Mountain from 25 cells out! I was never much for Texture Replacers before, but I thought what the heck, I'm going for it. If it doesn't run well, oh well, I tried...but I am enjoying great success...and I love how it looks. I had to hunt down the d3dx9_40.dll but that wasn't really a problem for long.
Thanks for the heads up Davor, and thank you Knots for simplifying the sublime.
Wowie Zowie....My game will never be the same.

glad i could help :)
i found that guide very useful, too. even though i can't use mge, but the choice of textures etc. in that guide helped me a lot to improve the graphics yet again.

Aquan, texture resolution shouldn't hurt your framerates really provided your graphics card has enough video ram for them. I really can't see Morrowind needing more than 512mb of video ram for all current texture replacers, IF THAT. You could probably get away with 256mb vram.

What really hits FPS is shaders, and how hard they hit your framerate, from how I understand it, is your card's clockspeed.

I still really wish Davor would let me know what gave him trouble with MGE so that I could clarify in my guide whatever it was. That way, no one else that thinks similarly to him will have the same problems.

Knots, that being said, what is the practical purpose of the 4gb patch in this application...ie...MGE and everything outlined in your guide? Shaders running full bore or something like that? What is the practical use here for more RAM?
A couple of things to get some getting used to: The color saturation when going thru a door, or saving. What causes that and can it be changed?
I'm experiencing a peculiar "ghosting" around outlines of some statics for example around the Menhir rocks up on the coasts against the water. Do you suppose that anti-aliasing [I meant anisotropic filtering] (or other) functions could cure that and how taxing (and in what way) would it be on the system? I don't intend to load you up on questions but if you could address these it would certainly be appreciated.
[edit] Or anybody else's knowledgeable thoughts on these?

4gb patch allows MW to gobble up a lot more memory on 64bit OSes, so it can cache more zones (no loading bar on the worldmap)(NOTE you have to change the INI settings to really get this specific benefit), process more NPCs, scripts, while not swapping to disk much (if ever)

on 32bit OS, its limited to an address range that can be a noticeable slowdown due to swapping.

As for the 'ghosting' you mentioned, Aquan, sounds like SSAO to me, not aliasing. Are you running SSAO?

Nevermind the 'ghosting', I see what it is now, it appears to be the waves splashing on the base of the rocks. I can live with that now that I have my glasses on. :blush2:
Thanks.
I don't know what SSAO is, so I'm probably not running it. I did basically everything in your guide. (except for Darknuts armor, which was more than I wanted to deal with at the time, and the 4gb patch which was unnecessary as I only have 2gb anyway).
This setup is really the cat's meow !
