Superbowl Commercial Hijinks

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 11:43 am

Who else thought the Superbowl commercial that opened up on a a snowy mountain valley with a castle was going to be Skyrim? Heck they even had orcs and a dragon attacking it, I thought it was the real deal until the Monstrous Lizard drank down a 20 oz.
Could Coke have been playing off the hype of Skyrim to reach a wider audience?

I didn't even fall prey to the link - I could tell it was a lure to some "Sports related thing" that was Not Skyrim.

I am already aware that a sporting event took place last night - but there was No swords, no magic, no dragons, no TES references and thus it had nothing to draw my interest. :)

The first two seconds I thought: Hm... Throat of the World!? It looked really good those two seconds, too good to be Skyrim. Then after I saw the furry creatures... lol.

It took you that long to realize it wasn't about Skyrim? I mean, the little furry people didn't give it away?

Why would Beth have a commercial during the superbowl?

1. Wrong target audience
2. The game is still very far away
3. Superbowl ads cost in the millions.

I may have been under the influence of some drink other than Coke at the time, now that I go back and watch it I do see that it was more hoping for it than actually seeing what ridiculous creatures were in it. Now that being said, do you think Coca-Cola was riding the hype train of Skyrim? I for one don't put together Snowy Mountain Fortress and Dragons and think Coca Cola, just seems odd that the setting was so similiar to what I have been reading on the Skyrim articles.

From my cultural background, I grew up in the Southeast US. A group of my friends discovered Morrowind in Middle School and we all fell in love with it. We showed it to other friends and pretty soon a large sizable chunk of our class became big fans. That being said, we live in a Football community. It dominates every Friday night whether you play or not. I am willing to bet that in this region, the Superbowl was watched by most people, and a portion of those people love RPGS. If its worth $3 Million, I don't know, but it would be interesting to run the numbers, and I may do that in a later post.

Didn't Halo 3 place a Superbowl Ad? Can someone check me on that? Just saying I think the precedent has been set.

Keep in mind that this insight is coming from an extremely narrow point of view, and my class/school may be an isolated case with the love for RPGS. However, I do assure you that Football is King in the Southeast, regardless of other interests we have in common.

In the commercial they showed some Asian/Nepalese/Tibetan/Japanese snowy mountain Architecture, I wonder if we'll see this in Skyrim together with the Nordic style.

When it first came on I had a glimmer of hope when I saw a dragon. I highly doubted it though but their was a faint trickle from my gut. I thought it to be more WOW esque.
