How does it play?

The most important thing for me about an FPS is the feel of the controls. Does moving feel slow or fast? Are the guns sluggish and heavy or light and quick? In short, does it feel "right?"

I realise that not many people have tried the game, so this isn't exactly a question. But if anyone here tried it at PAX or some other event, it would be cool to hear about it!
For me, it's important that the guns have some "heft" to them; that the animations, controls and sound effects make the gun believable and makes shooting it feel "right." Some games pull this off very well, while in others you feel like you are running around with a gun made out of paper and cardboard. From the videos it seems like Brinks weapons *may* be a little on the flimsy side, but it's really difficult to tell just from watching the vids.

Another dealbreaker for me is the movement. Brink looks like it nails what I want out of a shooter right on the head, but the vids tell very little about the actual SMART system. I don't mean the in-game stuff, that I understand; I'm talking about the controls, the button layout and stuff like that. I will be playing Brink on a pc, so I am of course going to have a slightly different experience than the console crowd.
So when I think about the controls, I'm really wondering about the SMART button. The way I understand it, it works sort of like a sprint button? Like, you hold the SMARt button in and you sprint, vaulting over or sliding under stuff as you approach it? Or is sprint a different button, and you have to press SMART when you get to an obstacle?
Again, if anyone has tried it in some stage of it's development, how does using the SMART system feel?

For anyone who wasn't at PAX or anywhere else where Brink has been showed off in an unfinished state, feel free to speculate, rant and rave. :)

More Killzone than Call of Duty.

On PC, SMART will probably be on 'Shift', press to toggle sprint, hold to use SMART. The usual.
I guess crouch will be on 'C' instead of 'CTRL', though, so you can manually slide without knotting your fingers while trying to hit both 'Shift' and 'CTRL'.

That sounds reasonable. I wonder if you'll be able to jump, or if SMART takes over for that as well. I guess maybe you don't need to be able to jump when you've got SMART, though the jump-button is sort of integral to the FPS experience.

every single action that the smart button will do automatically for you can also be done manually through the combination of sprint(same as smart button), jump, and crouch buttons for increased benefit. It has been stated many times in vids and dev written documents that those who decide to do their parkour manually with the proper timing will move significantly faster than those just holding down the smart button. its really quite ingenious. you can also do the tricks manually with smart enabled so just incase you mess up on a key press you can always hold down smart to save yourself from messing up. if there is one thing you dont have to worry about being absolutely perfect in this game its the movement. its just downright amazing.

SAWEEEEEEEET :))) It's like strafejumping is the quake based game : Warsow. You can do the oldschool movement which will make you strafe much faster and further or you can have the "new movement" which is comparable to the smart button.

Being able to manually control your parkour movements might be a good way to seperate yourself from the pack ;)

it is very very fast . one moment you are shooting a stupid operative. the next you are running and setting up mines . it is very fun even tho it was a little hard to some times do the things like sliding and shooting . but it might just be me.

I think there'll be different levels of SMARTery, anyone can hold down the button and look where they want to go, with some experience, they'll be able to predict what the system is going to do and shoot at the same time (Smoothe Shooting Across Random Terrain), MMART (Manual movement across random terrain), and pick faster routes than the ones done automatically (Thirdeye), when they get good at all of those skills, they should be able to learn to switch between them on the fly (Ripping it up), and finally do all at the same time (Wraithing it up). :ninja:

BTW, I heard they were were going to put SMART on the left trigger (by default, there's loads of control options, even stick sensitivity near centre AND near edge :) , if they did it COD style, it'd be harder to change directions while doing it, (hell, I even found sprinting forward tricky at first on MW2)
