In defense of the much maligned compass

Keep magnetic compass, get rid of quest markers, replace them with ability to place more of your own map markers imho.

This is gud

There has to be a compass, just not the magic compass. Quest markers should stay, they just need to mark the location of where you need to go, not the stick the person your supposed to find or be inside a dungeon to show you were the item or objective is for your quest. Quest markers just need to show you where you need to go in general, not guide you to your goal, it doesn't make sense that you magically know where the item or person is but it does make sense that the quest giver knows where you need to go and they mark it on your map, aka the quest marker.

What the heck is wrong with having a compass? There's been one on screen in every TES game, but suddenly, just with Oblivion, everyone hates it? I agree no quest markers, but those =/= compass, please be specific.

OP how can you defend the compass!?! WORST IDEA EVER!!! Lol okay I'm over reacting... I don't mind the compass if there's an option to turn it off... oh and better directions... I mean if you can turn it off then there's more challenge to find stuff... if you get that lost or frustrated you can just turn it on like a hint :) no biggie.

Edit... by compass I mean quest markers :) a compass to get your bearings on what direction youre travelling should be there... I mean why not? Unless you have the hud off. Which I assume in an option.

As Ive said before, we’re obviously all pretty hardcoe players or we wouldn’t be on here a year before the game comes out. Things like quest arrows are there to make the game accessible to everyone.

Like fast travel, I may not like it, but its really a pretty small compromise.

So long as they don’t force us to use it this time, just put on you big girl panties and deal with it.

I hope all the interesting places around are not shown on our compass, so that we can search for them ourselves.

Gad, how I hated the fact that I knew about all the surrounding caves, dungeons and the like to a large radius, and did not have the satisfaction of stumbling upon them as was the case in Morrowind.

Morrowind's minimap just showed such a close a distance that it would not be possible to see it on the map before you had found it yourself in front of you, and only helped us when the entrance was well, hidden and we had followed the directions until we were quite near the entrance.

Please have compass functionality. It was dead useful for navigating in both Morrowind and Oblivion.

I don't want my compass telling me anything besides "North, South, East and West"! Most of the time while I was playing Oblivion my eyes were glued to the bottom of the screen instead of actually watching the game.
