Installation gone wrong

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:09 am

I posted my story in the Mods section of the Oblivion forums but am hoping to reach a larger base here. Ive installed Oblivion 3 times across two different computers and on a recent install decided that i cluttered up the data folder with too many mods and had created a generally "dirty" game. I wanted to start fresh so i deleted all the necessary folders and uninstalled the game from the splash screen. I reinstalled the game and started to load up some basic utilities as well as the UOP's. I then tried to play the game so that the ini would loud up properly but the game crashes before getting to the Bethesda screen, keep in mind no mods that altered the data folder had been installed yet. I figured something must have went wrong with the install so i go to the splash screen and try to uninstall and i get a message telling me that I need to go to the setup.exe on the disc. I go to that and it loads for a few minutes and then says that the original disc could not be found. Ive tried everything from a manual removal of the program and associated folders to a registry fix ( in which i could find the Oblivion registry that 1 help site referenced. Ive been fighting with this for a few days now, one of my friends said that maybe the game key is no longer valid so i should contact Bethesda to have them reset it, but as far as i know no such key exists on my box.

Edit: forgot to include two crucial pieces of info. Im using Windows 7 and have the Game of the Year Edition.

Oblivion has no "game key" as far as I know.

You probably broke something by deleting the program files before uninstalling.

I reinstalled Oblivion recently and was crashing and had no sound, went to the forums and found out I had a codec problem. The solution for someone else worked for me, don't know if you're having that problem or not, but check in the hardware/software issue section of the OB forum. If your problem is of a different nature then make a thread there, maybe?

Then search in that forum with the search engine until you think you find a similar problem. That's how I found out the solution to mine, and I never made one post. :P

Please do not crosspost, one topic is enough and your other one is in the correct forum.
