Post » Mon May 16, 2011 11:56 pm

For the past few months I have been trying out different characters os different races and classes, trying out different things.

But I now feel it is time to find that 'perma-character', but I need help building this character, as I dont want to have to keep restarting. I want a character I can have a bond with.and hopefully, play for years to come.

Help!

It's different for everyone, but the characters that speak to me most are the ones with weaknesses and strength in peculiar ways.

I am the same way. After having played the game for a year and a half now, I start to look for ways to limit my characters. For example, I now limit my magicians to only using one element/type of attack spell (Fire, Frost, Shock, Absorb Health, Poison, etc...) It makes the game not only more challenging, but also adds something to the character's personality. My current character http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/oblivion/Oblivion541.jpg is a Nord, and only uses Frost spells for example. She even dyes her hair white, and wears the Amelion armor because it has that cold, frosted look to it.

I agree with Count Lauriel and SubRosa. I think part of it depends on where you are on the experience scale. I think the longer we play and more we learn, the easier Oblivion becomes.

I enjoy my 'perma character' who is a Bosmeri mystic archer. She is extremely specialized, while also being severely 'gimped' or limited. She immobilizes with illusion, and kills with her bow. Support abilities include poison, stealth, detect life, drain speed, weakness to magic.

Her limitations include:

Never ever increasing endurance, strength or luck. In retrospect, she could have easily ignored Speed as well. She does not ignore personality, but that is only for RP purposes.

She dresses only for fashion, not giving a whit about armor class. If she gets hit more than a couple times, she's dead anyway. Not surprisingly, her armor rating when adventuring is typically about. . . 12. Lol.

She will not touch any weapon except her bow.

She is quite poor with fire, frost and shock magic to the point where they don't help her kill anything. In fact her only 'direct damage' ability besides her bow is absorb health.

While playing, I travel with her, I don't 'become' her. Over time, she has developed an extremely rich personality. She travels with her precious black mare who is a wonderful companion. She also maintains a journal of her travels that helps to enhance her game.

If you've tried them all and still can't find one, we may not be able to help, because you haven't decided what you like yet. Have you tried characters with limitations? It's probably more useful to find out what you can do without, in a game that lets any race and either gender excel in any skill, regardless of where they start off.

You'll also have to decide if any of the enemies in the game are must-haves, as some of the options for a gimped character might mean never getting past levels where some of them appear in the game. Do you want the perma-character to close the Gates, never open them, or something in between? Are there quest-lines you don't want to complete, never start?

A perma-character needs to have a number of skills selected as majors, that he/she will never use, so that a plateau can be reached in levels with some skills at 100, and others never moving. That way there won't be any more level-ups, and any other skill increases won't change the game. If you let your character get up to level 50+, then battles last for ever, because everything has stupid amounts of health, and weapons and spells stopped improving at around level 25. So most perma-characters are capped somewhere in the 20's by careful selection of majors, and a deliberate choice not to raise some skills at all.

The perma-character needs an infinite quest, too. Like eliminating all the bandits. Something that can't ever be "done" so there's no need to restart with a fresh character and do it again. If you're going to have the Gates open, then you need to avoid closing them, or you'll run out after 60.

Or you could just stop sleeping, when you decide to stop the levelling ;)

I still have one of the first characters I created when the game came out. I've been playing since release day. He's almost a lv.50. Honestly if I'd thought to cap his leveling, I really wish I had. Knowing what I know now, it would have been nice. So, I have a high level character who's maxed out in a lot of things. The Necromancers have nicely leveled spells, which often come close to nicely leveling my character lol. I didn't use to have to carry around health potions. Consequently I don't use him as much for straight game play. He has always had a spot in my fan-fic. He was the reason I started one. I know more about his life, and the lives of his friends and family. I've created loads of characters because of him, explored every cave, closed far more gates than was prudent. I love the character, and have had a lot of fun playing across Cyrodiil. Could I hope to rebuild him in TES:V? I may try, but I don't think it's possible to recreate him. Something I have found in my own experiences of nearly 4,000 hours playing this game: a character either captures your heart and imagination or they don't. I have had just as many characters capture my attention as I've had totally bore me. Trial and error is usually what ends up leading you to 'the one'. I don't think there's a single person here that really could help you as an individual find 'the one'. I lucked out with number 3, but who knows the whens and wheres of a 'good' character? I certainly don't; but I'm always happy to hear when someone finds one they enjoy.

How many majors are best to reach a level 20 cap? I have 4 majors that I always use. Is this enough?

I always forget to mention this. The reason is that it most certainly works, but is completely unacceptable to me for roleplay purposes. For players who feel differently, it can indeed be a very simple solution. :goodjob:

20 is my cap of choice as well, but it is awkward. Maxing 3 major skills (ignoring 4) will typically get you to around level 23 (depends on your starting bonuses from specialization/race). Maxing 2 majors (ignoring 5 gets you aound 15. What I do for level 20 is max 2 majors and do some very limited leveling with one or more of the others. This all assumes you are not on PC. PC players have about 100 or so more ways to do this kind of thing.
