NetCoding and P2P School

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:07 am

Looked at the FAQ and saw P2P only available for Console users and Dedicated Servers, of course and as usual, allocated to PC. In lieu of scouring several of the pre-existing P2P Threads going on for an answer, I'm curious how the net-coding is coming along for Brink and praying to the God of Jelly and Jam and Thunder that Bethesda/SplashDamage didn't sit in on the same class that the Crysis 2 Team skated through on P2P Hosting and Regional Filtration Systems. Hopefully there wasn't any outsourcing to a coffee bean counting plant in El Salvador. Please tell me the lag and hit detection system won't be a complete random act of science.

No info as yet, but if the game is popular enough dedicated servers for consoles could be added, fingers crossed.

Many thanks for the turtle. If all goes according to plan, we will need as many turtles as we can collect in the coming Apocalypse

Yeah we're gonna train them all to swim together and then use them as some sort of raft to get to the ARK......thats just insane enough that it might work......

Hopefully a Moderator will pass this along. I'd actually like to see a design team response. C2 was a huge disappointment in terms of latency and input response.

im with ya brotha im so tired of p2p C2 , Black Ops and it seems to be getting worse with the new tech. mw2 didnt have half the connection issues of black ops ... i hope brink may eventually use dedicated servers for consoles.

It would be nice to have dedicated servers, but if the netcoding svcks then it won't make a difference. If you want to see the result of bad netcoding, go spend a few minutes on the MyCrysis forums. The majority of the Crytek community is enraged over how poor the hit detection and lag is - basically crippling any chance at good gameplay. They basically released an unfinished product and prayed the graphics would carry the game in spite of its now 60 page thread of bugs/errors.

All I can do is remain hopeful that Bethesda is watching and picks up on some major
red flags from its competition.

Bethesda is the publisher they dont touch the code.

Also, you have a better chance of a dev response at the splash damage forums.

You're probably right, but I figured I would address the forum here first since I see some knowledgable posts going.

I know SD is working on their own netcode for P2P.

That can be a good thing or a bad thing. Hope they aren't rushing it and taking a page from the book of similarly coded titles that are on the less laggy end of the spectrum. It looks like the game is using a cell-shading system similar to Borderlands. I may be wrong, but it seems to keep the poly-count pretty low and create less of problem during fire fights with multiple opponents.

Somewhat off topic, I just wanted to say thanks to whomever is responsible for having working forums and moderators that support them. I just tried to delete my Crysis 2 Forum account for the seventh time today...only to be resurrected when I refreshed my browser. Apparently they've hired a crack team of meth addicted spider monkeys to put together the html forum encoding that's currently in use over at MyCrysis. It's like an STD you can't shake.

Is it even possible to implement a decent Dedicated Server system after a network code has been finished and is being used? I haven't heard of any such thing, but even if it could be done I'd still prefer it to be working straight from the original code.

Seeing plentiful of topics on this subject reassures me that this issue is carrying a lot of weight with a broad public, and I think if anyone can pull this of it's SD. Other developpers are probably under too much publisher stress to make a marketable (sequel) game. These are just the times we live in when games became mainstream and money became all that matters.
