Hm. Well, the best answer I can give is that your class is very temporary, and your abilities are (mostly) permanent. If you spent a lot of credits on Engi abilities, you can still switch to Ops during a game, but then your character wouldn't be able to use the abilities you bought (unless you also have a nice reserve of Universal abilities).

The Brink Bible mentioned that there is (currently) a 24-hour grace period for ability purchases in which you can sell the ability back for a small cost if you don't like it, with the cost escalating after 24-hours.

This is a good reason to utilize multiple characters -- that way you can specialize and tailor each one.

I was under the impression that grace period was taken out, and now if you wish to de-select an ability you can only do so at the cost of a level. Or some such

You aren't "forced" to be versatile, but yes, you have a finite amount of ability points (20) that you can spend on whichever skills you want. If you purchase and activate class-specific skills they will be in effect while you are that class. Universal abilities are always active, on the other hand.

Example (because examples make everything easier):

Bob
Level 20
5 Medic abilities
5 Soldier abilities
10 Universal abilities
Equally good at being a Medic and a Soldier. Not quite as good at being an Engineer or an Operative.

I know this is just an example but why have 5 class abilities if you can only use 3 at a time?

You can have more than 3 at a time. You just can't have more than 3 active abilities at a time, per class. Active abilities being things like turrets, special grenades, etc. which have to be selected via the D-pad, as opposed to passive abilities like faster bomb defusal or extra health.

There is a limit to the skills per class that you can take into battle with you though. I can't remember if it was 5 or 10...

I meant that you had 5 for the soldier and 5 for the medic. You waisted 2 abilities on each of those two classes because you can only use 3 at a time per class.....

You can use three active abilities for a class (set to buttons) and have multiple passive abilities for the class (abilities that don't need activation).

For example, the soldier can use three different types of grenades, each using one of his active slots, but he also can use the kevlar ability which is passive and thus always in effect.

But the limit is 5 skills per class, not 3 (went back and checked). :geek:

Let me try to explain myself better. You put 5 abilities that are medic specific. Lets say 3 of these are Laz nade, health boost, and self revive. Then there are 2 more class specific abilities left. Those last 2 are a waste of ability points. ( I am not talking about universal abilities, I am talking about class specific and I already know you can only have 3 class specific per class and unlimited universal ones at a time)

They're not wasted, they just have to be passive. 5 skills per class, total, can be taken into a match. Of those 5, only 3 can be "active" skills. 2 or more of them will, therefore, have to be "passive" skills. I am unsure whether or not the 5 skill limit also applies to universal abilities.

Passive and universal are not the same.

Universals are abilities that aren't connected to any particular class.

Passive abilities are abilities that you constantly benefit from without having to activate by button press, there maybe passive Universals as well as passive class specifcs, but I don't know how many of which.
