Best bet is to stick with the Main Quest for a bit. Gives you some tips, money, etc. Fighters guild/House Hlaalu is also good for quick cash.
Hlaalu is basically the "beginners" House
[oh noes, Psycholex starts a House war]
/rage How dare you insult the honor of House Hlaalu!? I summon you to a du-du-du-duel!!! /end rage :spotted owl:
If you want a good way to get more money and level up, I recommend going tomb-diving. The trick is to load up on fire spells/weapons, silver weapons, and have an Intervention in case things get a bit too rough. Always save outside the tomb (it could be filled with vampires...) or check the tomb on the wiki to see if you can handle it ( http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind ).
Potion-making is a great way to make money, and so is hunting cliff racers. Yes they're annoying, but those plumes are worth 20 septims (!!), which is a big deal when you're a low-level and most other monsters drop stuff worth like 5 or 10 septims (I'm looking at you alits, kagouti... For animals most likely to kill you, they drop crap stuff). And look on the bright side-- you're doing a public service for Vvardenfel! Now go out there and do it for the children!!!!
It really would be great to have your build and what factions you're in. Telling you potion making is worthless if you're running a character with 5 in Alchemy, or telling you to steal when you're sneak is less than 20...
Oh. I should also note that the Morag Tong will net you money. Of course, money is virtually worthless once you reach level 15 or so because you'll find oodles of it in caves and whatnot, but maybe the quests (which essentially come to: Find this guy. Talk to him/taunt him. Kill. Show warrant of execution. Saunter back to the guild for gold. Rinse and repeat.) are worth it at a low level...
