Game of the Year Version Require a Patch?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:33 am

Hello all, I am so sorry since I'd bet all of money this has been asked a thousand times, in fact perhaps by me, but my old memory is gone and my search skills svck (yes I tried a search first), so I'm asking again.

Is there a patch for the Game of the Year Edition??

After installing my game of the year, my Fallout3.exe file is dated 7-15-09. I notice on this website a patch for Fallout 3 is available and is dated 7-27-09. So, is that patch strictly for Fallout 3 and the Game of the Year edition already includes those changes or should I update my game of the year version with that patch dated 7-27-09.

Again, sorry. If this is repeated so many times as to make mods angry, then just delete this and I will play with my Game of the Year version.

BTW, if I may, I'd like to make a suggestion.

IMO the NUMBER ONE question that EVERY new purchaser of ALL games asks is "Are there any patches, and if so, which patches are applicable to which versions." I mean, IMO this is the MOST IMPORTANT question. Later comes installation or driver questions and then later still comes gameplay questions. But I'd bet that most folks, like me, immediately upon purchasing a new game wonders if there are patches for it so as to ensure they have the absolute latest version to include all fixes up to date.

So, IMO, every game company should have in their forums, a sticky that lists all relevant patch information. Including perhaps FAQ about patches. Such as my question above. I know speaking for myself this would make the initial experience with a new game MUCH simpler. I've found that just finding out if there is a patch and if so which patch is relevant to which version is sometimes very difficult. IMO companies would do well by having this basic information as readily available as possible.

Thanks for the opportunity to voice my frustration about my experience with MOST new games, not just Fallout 3.

The GOTY edition is already fully patched so nothing is needed. As for your second post, it's completely irrelevant. There's only one patch required for all versions so there's absolutely no need for a sticky thread about it. That applies to all games from what I've seen frankly, I've never seen different patches for different versions. There's only older patches and newer ones, that are more complete and fix more things. The only exception to this might be patches for different language or geographical versions.

Ok, thank you.

We'll disagree on the relevance then, because I've seen, and this example proves, that there are patches that are for some versions but not others. For example, you just told me that the patch dated 7-27-09 is for the regular Fallout version, but is NOT for the Fallout Game of the Year version. Many times I've purchased game of the year version and found that the patches on their web site were in some cases for the regular, initial release version while others were for the game of the year version, or, in the case of the Civilization series, for the "Complete" version of the game.

Not sure how you can claim there's only one patch required for all versions in the same post that you just told me the Fallout patch 1.7 patch was for the originial version of the game but NOT for the Game of the Year version. Even though that patch is dated later than than the executable on the game of the year version. But thanks anyway, at leat you've answered my question.

That's because the GOTY version already contains that patch, it doesn't require anything else. There's absolutely no difference in the games once they're both installed and the standalone Fallout is fully patched to the latest version. And Civilization is a different case as it comes with a couple of expansions, so it will require a patch for each one. But only if you intend on playing all three versions separately. Since the final expansion contains everything from the first one and the initial game, it effectively has only one final patch as well. Even then, the patches for the previous versions are already contained on the later expansions and automatically applied as you install.

What part of "it's the same patch" do you not understand? The only difference is that one comes with it already installed and the other doesn't. In fact, the GOTY doesn't even have it automatically installed, it's a separate file that gets added at the end of the install process, exactly like you would do with it the regular game. Bethesda's installer just takes care of it for you automatically.

And someone that just purchased the game is supposed to know that??

Which part of if you just purchased plain old Fallout 3 in a discount bin and got home you WOULD need to install the patch but if you had just purchased the GOTY version you WOULD NOT need to install the patch do you not understand? Folks who just purchased a game don't know those types of details, and it happens all the time with games. IMO that's the FIRST thing someone asks when they purchase a game, "Does it need patching?" And if someone had just purchased the plain old Fallout 3 it WOULD need patching while someone who just purchased the GOTY version WOULD NOT need patching, yet one can't tell that simply by looking at the website where the patch is located.

I'm not sure what it is you're trying to accomplish by attempting to belittle me or my ideas, but whatever it is I couldn't care less. You've just proved my point about how confusing it is to new purchasers of a game as to whether a patch is for the version they've just purchased or not. Thank you.

OK, I guess you do have a point. I don't think though that this info warrants a separate thread of it's own, that info would be better off on the home site's update page. Or people can do what you just did and ask the question on the forums, and they will be answered. Eventually at least. It also becomes evident that the GOTY is patched as people won't even be able to apply 1.7 on top of it. There will be some sort of message that comes up letting them know.
