Advice/suggestions for playing a non-violent character?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 10:22 am

Hi all,
I've been reading the forum for a few months, but this is my first post. The forum's been a great source for ideas and information so far!

My female Imperial has just completed the main quest and my roleplay is that she will now "ascend". In addition to never starting a fight, she will also try to end fights peacefully.

So, after kitting her out in White Mage's Robes and White Mage's Shoes, I've created these two custom spells:

_Pacify:
Calm up to level 25 for 90 seconds on target.
Charm 100 points for 90 seconds on target.

_Terrify:
Demoralize up to level 25 for 120 seconds on target.
Turn Undead up to level 25 for 120 seconds on target.

She also carries Wabbajack, and has a Paralyze spell too.

She's currently working towards acquiring a Drain Strength/Speed 100 points spell. The purpose of this will be to immobilize an enemy, where she will then disintegrate their weapon and armor, and then give them a chance to flee.
(it's a bit tricky to acquire this spell, but still possible: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Drain_Attribute)

I'd thought about creating a Command Humanoid and Command Creature spell, but then decided that it wouldn't fit with the roleplay... having an enemy fight for her just promotes violence!

So my question is... can anybody think of any other fun things for me to do with this build? Any other spells I could create? I only have minimal experience with enchanting and alchemy, so any suggestions for those two?

Thanks.

Fortify speed/fortify athletics. A pacifist needs the option to flee, after all.

I must say this is an interesting build, a character who doesn′t fight. Very fresh idea indeed! Good luck with her :goodjob:
As the Fishy Stick has been provided, there′s no need for me to give you one more ;)

Welcome to the forum :foodndrink:

Thanks :)

She's up at level 35, birthsign was The Steed, and I increased speed at every level... so she's pretty fast already!

Her class is an Aerialist: Acrobatics, Alchemy, Alteration, Athletics, Conjuration, Destruction, and Illusion.

I'll definitely investigate those fortify spells. One problem though is that her Restoration skill is only around 35 so I don't think I'll be able to make the effect last very long!

I haven't tried it myself, but apparently if you stack a character's Personality way high, that alone will prevent a lot of normally hostile entities from attacking you. The Wiki doesn't go into great detail about it. Maybe you can do some research on the matter for them. ;)

Good suggestion UnclePain!

You know... I actually investigated that, but then I worried that it might break my game beyond repair. Much like 100% chameleon, I thought that it might take a lot of the excitement out of the game.

According to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Personality, she'd need to have a personality over 180. I think I'll give that a go, but keep a few backup saves just in case! ;)

If you use enchantments there′s no worry about ruining your saves as you can just take them away. Just try it out and see if it works :)

I could never do this. I very much like using violence to solve my problems in a video game. One might say, in fact, that I love it.

I'm reminded of a line from a movie, slightly altered to Oblivion:

"I myself once dabbled in pacifism - not in Cyrodiil, of course."

I warn you now. It's very difficult. Although you're lucky you're not starting from the beginning with this character.

Helena Aurelie is a Healer and therefore won't kill anything that's living. Calm spells, invisibility, paralyse and demoralize will be your best friends.

I've done some experiments with Fortify Personality, and here's what I've found...

(with Fame of 77 and Infamy of 0)

Personality at 200 : a few of the marauders in Rockmilk Cave were no longer aggressive. I think one was an Imperial and one was an Altmer.

Personality at 300 : none of the marauders in Rockmilk Cave were aggressive. I don't know about the Black Bandits because none of them survived!

Personality at 400 : none of the enemies I could find anywhere were aggressive (this includes Daedroth and Xivilai).

Having no aggressive enemies turned the world into a very dull place though, so I won't be continuing on with that. It was a fun experiment though!

Count Lauriel,
I'll be interested to read about Helena's experiences. Her journal's already open in another tab, and I'll just start reading it now :)

Just curious, but does the 'laying to rest' of the undead count as a violent action?

Sadly her journal isn't up to date. However, I'm making a conscious effort to pick it up again. Well, I need to convince her to sit down with me and help me write it.

It's a violent action, yeah. But Helena doesn't mind. She'll go all out at undead.

Really interesting concept. Instead of having a Personality in those upper reaches of levels that you found, why not have it where some attack, and some do not. You would always be in a combat situation, but think of it as a spell barrier/buffer against oncoming waves. thus creating a type of protective field around you as you venture forth. Drain Fatigue might come in handy. How would you feel about just protecting yourself, and having a summons do the dirty work? That is, however, dangerously close to the line, I'm thinking roleplay-wise.
