Altmer Thread

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:17 am

So for my secondary character I have created Viktoria, an Altmer Apprentice combination pure mage. So much like my Orc thread I wanted to do an Altmer thread and talk with other Altmer players. Here it is.

My favouritest race. The weakness to magic is an important factor at low levels, you can cast loads of spells, but those Scamps really hurt.

The good : Loads of magicka ; tall so they run a little bit faster ; pointy ears for Zeldatastic nostalgia factor ; the archetype destruction caster ; resistant to disease, who wants to catch the collywobbles? ; white skin+white hair+Daedric claymore=Elric ; Elven shortsword is the coolest looking standard weapon in all Cyrodiil.

The bad : weak to elemental magic, hunting conjurers ceases to be a sport, more a fight for survival ; low strength and endurance, close combat needs planning and effort ; pointy ears for Mr. Spock daftness ; Elven boots are a joke.

The ugly : no one likes you, arrogance has a price, Argonians are more popular in polite circles ; yellow skin means an extra ten minutes in Facegen, creating a lore unfriendly skin tone that doesn't look quite so diseased.

Death to the Altmer....

Seriously though, my most hated race. I've played them and enjoyed them, but overall I hate them.
Lets go back to my early experiences with Altmer in Oblivion, they...
called me mean things
looked down on me
looked down on me (literally)
were arrogant and smug
and
Spoiler
tried to kill me for my fake merchandise and tried to kill me when he turned into a ayelid lich-king, both after I was nice and friendly to them :verymad:

I like playing Altmer. Although I do not like being so tall, so I modded the game to make them shorter when I play one. My first pure mage http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/oblivion/Oblivion304.jpg was one, as was my Spellaxe http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/oblivion/Oblivion520.jpg, whom I made born under the Apprentice for extra fun. Obviously the extra magicka makes it easier to use one as a magician. But I like the weaknesses they receive, especially when you throw in the Apprentice. They make lovely glass cannons. Since I look for ways to gimp my characters to make them more fun to play, they are high on my list of favorite races.

I also like many of the Altmer NPCs in the game. Nerussa is just total swoonage for me, and was my character Teresa's first lover. Ardaline is just so incredibly adorable with her shy, girl-next-door quality. Ungarion is so filled with good cheer and exuberance "Take a chance on the Warlock's Luck!" that you would think he was a Bosmer! Carahil is just a total knockout, the super-model of Anvil and the head of the local MG to boot. Othesse is the epitome of kindness and compassion. She turned my Mazken http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/subrosa_florens/oblivion/Oblivion320.jpg, into a true believer of Mara just through her example alone. I am sure there are more I am forgetting, but those are a good start.

i like making altmer spell slingers, i've never made a strait up fighting high elf before. They look frail, what with their yellowed skin. I've made a spellsneak, that was pretty fun, illusion + bow = dead bandits. My first character i played on the pc was a altmer atranock, i had so much magicka lol

I gave mine a somewhat gothic look, blue eyes with long black hair, and a I darkened her lipstick and eye make up. She looks pretty good :D
I charactorize her as a dark and elegant. Part Queen, part cruel dominatrix.

Do you guys think that playing Altmer Apprentice is an advanced or dare I say leet thing to do. As in its one of those things most people would have difficulty with but if your good, has a ton of reward?

It's like playing Eldar in 40k, if you know what you are doing, the devastation easily overcomes any weakness, if you aren't sure, try marines ( or Orcs, Redguard or Nords ).
The trouble with a Altmer Apprentice is, it's possible to get one shotted at low levels,a good thing imho, keeps you on your toes, but as you say, enough items and 100% reflect or absorb or whatever, who cares how weak you were, no down side, the Atronach at least forces you to use a lot of Alchemy, or some other method of restoring magicka, at all levels. And the Atronach forces you to play in a different way from any other Birthsign, so I would go for that, personally. Huge magicka boost, very powerful, but a constant reminder that this extra power has come at a price.

I really rather enjoy playing as Altmer. The weaknesses are difficult, yes, but they're perfect for creating glass cannons. I had an Altmer Apprentice named Laronwen. She was a pure mage, and epic fun to play. However, as Zen mentions, any other mage I came up against posed some rather serious issues.

Edit: Zak, yeah. I would say that playing an Altmer Apprentice is one of those things that you should really try when you're experienced enough. I know I wasn't when I did.

I don't really like Altmers. They seem snobbish and haughty. It would be cool to play an Altmer character, but it's the magicka thing that really irks me.

I used to love playing Altmer before I got some race mods. With magic overhauls an Apprentice Altmer that focuses purely on magic can summon 4 high level daedra and/or undead who can do your fighting for you. As long as you enhacnt some roebs to protect you from damage etc I find they can be an incredibly powerful and rewarding character to play. Well in my opinion anyway.

I'm also about to create an Altmer character, my first magic user i'll have rolled in over 3 years of playing Oblivion, unfortunately i won't be playing the PC version so mods are out of the question. I think with effort she could be turned into a very powerful being, and ultimately poor defence won't matter with the arsenal of spells being thrown an adversary's way :)

Lore-wise, I have a problem with Mer in general. I don't jibe with the whole "Divinity was stolen from us!" angle of the Creation Myth.

That said, I did have one Altmer character, Elowyn. She was pretty fun, I have to say. Fragile, but a nasty piece of work. Not a pure mage, though. She had something of a fetish for Claymores.

Agreed. I have no problem meeting them however as I have with Argonians and somewhat with Orcs
