Mount & Blade

M&B was developed by a couple and their scope was to make a game about swordfight , Taleworlds are not a 100 people studio with gym at the basemant although they took some extra personnel for warband , any comparison to AAA titles Beth is making is apples and oranges .

I don't see why. I wasn't aware games need to be on the same economic investment level to have similar features compared to each other. I guess comparing MW, OB or SK to each other isn't possible either, right?

It's medieval-European inspired melee combat in both of them from a 1st/3rd person perspective where both player and character weapon skills play a role.

Mount&Blade combat miserably fails in multiplayer. At a certain skill level the combat is the most terrible ever. Way too simple. Technically horrible.

Mount & Blade was awesome and definitely has more potential, especially if it was done with a professional company (Can imagine SEGA and the Total War team and Taleworlds being great), bit that sort of combat doesn't belong in TES. With that said I wouldn't mind some battles with about 50 NPCs, and some better battle AI. The fabled "Battle of Bruma" was the biggest let down of Oblivion - only like 12 guys rocked up for the central battle of the game. It wasn't even a battle it was just an untidy brawl. And I know for a fact my PC which is basically a crappy office Dell with a better GPU could run 70/80+ NPC battles on near full graphics, I tried it via the console command.

Care to elaborate? I'm frequenting a popular duelling server since it came out, and the fights between two guys who really know what they are doing are the most interesting ones, by far. I'm only good average, but the better I get the more I enjoy it to be honest. Chamber blocks, counter chambers, quick feints, the now nerfed kick slashes, doing all that and especially having all that thrown at you while the enemy disorients you with good footwork makes it very entertaining.

What do you mean?

Mount and Blade is a great example of how simple = awesome. People say it gets repetitive after a while, well I discovered it years ago and I'm playing it to this day, as are many others. The seemingly "simple" complexity of the combat system, coupled with its wide potential for modding are what really make it shine. It's not about quests, characters or RP elements (although what greater tool for a RP'er than a sandbox in which you can do whatever you want?), it's about versatility. There are mods that range from simple things like adding extra units, to stuff that converts it to a gunpowder regiment-based game, to warhammer fantasy setting. And it's not that hard to code, small groups of people are making it happen.

I don't think the two can be compared, as another poster said. Skyrim will be an AAA game, it can't get away with just one or two elements which have been focused on. It needs graphics, soundtrack, animations, quests, story....all that and more. What I hope is that the new engine will provide ample possibilities for the talented modders out there - that's the beauty of these games, long after the devs have done their thing, the community continues breathing new life into the game.

M&B not only has great combat, it also has great bow/crossbow combat. The bows have strength requirements, and the more you exceed the minimum requirement, the steadier your aim becomes and the more damage you do. The bows also have different speeds and sizes and damage, which is all very realistic.

I really hope BSG picked something up there.

I only played that game in like 2 hours (i just couldn't really get into it) but that had certainly nothing to do with the combat. It felt very natural. And i usually prefer a joypad. Ofcause i don't know if it's still fun after 20 hours.

It's still fun after 337+ hours which I've put into the original and warband combined :o

Yes Beth guys do play mount & play (not the warband [censored]) , it is in the blog .

Taleworlds made a truly free roam , not scaled, sandbox game and their fans love it , Beth's fans would be like "what should i do now? please hold my hand and tell me where to go" .

... saying the original is awesome while Warband is [censored] is ludicrous. Warband improves and polish the sandboxy singleplayer while adding an addicting multiplayer!

Yeah, M&B has got THE best combat simulation of all the games I've played, though in multiplayer it's even better if you play the new Vikingr mod, where you lose a lot more health pr hit, and everyone has a shield skill of 0 so it is possible to shoot someones face while they block. And there's also no aiming reticule, which actually is pretty okay.

Mount and Blades combat was highly developed for Mounted combat. Since TES has always had focus on non-mounted combat its unlikely they will try to emulate it. If they did they would basically just be bringing back the old Arena/Daggerfall fight system.

Have you played the game for much? The ground and pound is where the fun is! Mounted combat is just one aspect of the grand buffet.

Bless your heart

From the description of archery: "the longer you keep the bow drawn the more powerful your shot will be", it seems not. M&B took the more realistic approach of needing to aim and shoot in one quick move. If you keep the bow drawn your arm gets tired and your aim degrades, as it would in RL.

M&B melee combat is very PC specific - relying on mouse gestures and movement for swing direction and strength of hit. I can't see how it would easily translate to PS3/360.

M&B is very nice for the PC. But unfortunately, if this sort of combat mechanic trend is going to make it big, it will need to work on the consoles. You sure it couldn't translate well to the consoles? I don't see the problem. If you compare the standard FPS on PC vs consoles, the mouse/keyboard has the advantage but the controller for FPS is still very popular.

I have to agree with the OP. As much as i love Warband (although not playing so much due to the way mods have fragmented the MP) I can't call it a great game. It's an excellent combat sim but the actual play elements are severely deficient and that combat engine deserves better.

It's a lot more than a combat sim. It has a pretty complex economy and politics system. It only lacks in what Bioware does well: real NPC personality and a linear story.

I imagine you didn't play long, because it's definitely competitive and unforgiving for the beginner, but if you play long enough you'll see quite a lot of variety and find it quite a lot of fun.
