New Guy Here

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:32 pm

Hey guys... I just got Fallout 3 about two days ago. I have owned this game before - but never played it. Partly because it said Bethesda on it, and I knew they made that blasted Morrowind game (shudders).

However, after I got a new copy, I put it in and enjoyed it. Everything looks 'retro', and feels retro to. It's like the 1900's, with advanced technology. I was disappointed when I learned that the game was in 2077, whereas I originally thought it was after WWII.

Anyway, I liked Fallout 3 a lot, nothing like Morrowind (shudders). I instantly fell in love with the VATS. OH MY GOSH that thing is so awesome! Anyway, I began doing straight missions to see if I could unlock the guy on the front of the case. Well some chick named Reddin died, and I stole her armor. I am currently at the part where I have to find Rivet City - which I have and I am currently on the surface of the boat (after it took about 10 minutes to find out how to get on it).

1. Where can I 'train' to wear that armor on the cover? I already have it.
2. I liked when I followed those guys around and fought the Super Mutants. Is it possible to find a group of them and follow them around as if I was one of them and fight more super mutants - or no?
3. Bottle Caps seem important - they're in everything - and they don't have the 'junk' icon for their picture. What are they for?
4. I have an Assault Rifle, and a Chinese Assault Rifle. Should I sell one for room? Or no?
5. I need to know how to carry more than 200 lbs (or whatever the weight measurement is).
6. Is there a such thing as custom weapons... I want custom weapons like custom guns - not pre-made ones.
7. Any tips on ranged combat? The cover on the maps aren't very useful and I end up dying a lot. A LOT.
8. Is there ANYTHING else I should know? I have never played Fallout before.

I asked the mods to move your thread to the Cheats, Hints and Spoilers forum - you should get more responses there.

Gonna put these in spoiler tags, since I really recommend finding this stuff out yourself. Would make the game more fun, IMO.

Spoiler
1. The Brotherhood of Steel will train you to use it if you get far enough in the Main Quest
2. Yes. There are Brotherhood of Steel patrols in the game that you can follow and fight with.
3. They're money.
4. Chinese Assault Rifle is the stronger one, and they both use the same ammo, so yes.
5. Encumbrance (measure of how much you can carry) is determined by your strength attribute.
6. You can find schematics and use them to create weapons out of items you find in the world.
7. Make a character with high endurance, use cover as best as you can, and use VATS a lot if nothing else works.
8. Not that I can think of. Just ask here if you want to know anything else and I'm sure someone will help you. You could also check http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki if you need to know anything else, but again, I recommend just playing the game and figuring out stuff on your own. Much more rewarding.

Also, out of curiosity, what about Morrowind didn't you like?

Well Gamemastr, Morrowind was just awful to me.

I mean, the places weren't made good... the creatures weren't made right.... they did good at making their 'own' fantasy world. However, I just didn't like it.

I can't explain it... I just hated it. Especially when it took me about fifty hits just to hit someone. You know, since Fallout's interface and controls are like Morrowind, I made a character who could use guns a lot because I was scared Fallout's melee would be like Morrowind.

So far, I have never used a melee weapon in Fallout, and only used fist melee at the beginning to beat up a guard and a few radroaches.

Don't EVEN get me started on... the Oblivious Oblivion game.

1. Where can I 'train' to wear that armor on the cover? I already have it. Paladin Gunny of the Brotherhood of Steel can train you after you get access to the Citaldel. Like others said.
2. I liked when I followed those guys around and fought the Super Mutants. Is it possible to find a group of them and follow them around as if I was one of them and fight more super mutants - or no? Well, you can get various companions, but no, you can't get a BoS patrol to follow you.
3. Bottle Caps seem important - they're in everything - and they don't have the 'junk' icon for their picture. What are they for? They're a form of currency.
4. I have an Assault Rifle, and a Chinese Assault Rifle. Should I sell one for room? Or no? Yes, you should sell the assault rifle (not the Chinese one) because, frankly, it kind of svcks compared to its chinese cousin.
5. I need to know how to carry more than 200 lbs (or whatever the weight measurement is). You can't, unless you boost your strength using the 'Intense Training' perk.
6. Is there a such thing as custom weapons... I want custom weapons like custom guns - not pre-made ones. Yes, but it'll probably be a while 'til you find the schematics needed to make them.
7. Any tips on ranged combat? The cover on the maps aren't very useful and I end up dying a lot. A LOT. Don't spray; make shots count; use VATS frequently; and, most important, QUICKSAVE. OFTEN.
8. Is there ANYTHING else I should know? I have never played Fallout before. Ask around and pay attention to the dialog, that should be it.

Sorry to those who've probably already said this.
Also, why'd you buy FO3 if you saw Beth on the cover and hated them for MW?

I would really suggest just playing the game and finding out all this stuff for yourself op, it's a lot more fun that way. Reading your post though really took me back to when I first started playing Fallout 3, so much nostalgia :fallout:

Talk to everyone with a name, take notice of what they say and really explore locations.

You don't need to hurry the main story or do things when asked, there aren't any time constraints on quests.

Running away is often the best tactic.

Save the game as you leave the office and whenever you start a significant quest or before a significant choice.

I agree with Apex, just get out there and explore. I wouldn't use the Vault (the F3 wiki) unless it's absolutely necessary because you can really spoil the surprises that way, ask here if you get stuck, you'll get specific advise that doesn't give to much away.

well i suppose this should go under another section but lets not split hairs, its great youve turned to a forum for help so early on in the game but dont ask for every spoiler, all the info i have read above makes sense, i brought Fallout 3 on a whim and wow what a whim that was. but just remember with the game check every box and any sort of interaction with an item you can, if your unsure of things ask here everyone seems friendly enough and bottle caps are amazing they are currency lol (took me about an hour into my first time through to figure this out) Oh to be a Newbie again and play Fallout would be so much fun :fallout:
